Uniting Methodist Movement issued a new newsletter this week called "Room for All," intended to share information regarding the One Church Plan. The first issue includes the following:
"The One Church Plan affirms the authority of Scripture, while recognizing that the Bible itself is speaks in a multiplicity of voices and perspectives. There are two versions of the creation story (Genesis 1 and 2), two versions of Israelite history (Kings and Chronicles), two different ways of understanding God (Northern and Southern Kingdom), four different portraits of the gospels, and a wide variety of genres. Yet somehow, these differences speak to the same fundamental truths about God’s love and redemptive plan for all creation.
"The One Church Plan understands that the best way to interpret scripture is not through a cultural lens of traditional vs. progressive, but through the way of love revealed in Jesus. It views the scripture as life-giving and liberating, rather than as an implement of hostility or dehumanization. It is the means through which each person can live a life worthy of their calling (Ephesians 4:1) and is rooted in the idea that as 'People of the Book,' we can have earnest disagreements while staying united. As Christian people in the Wesleyan tradition, we understand love to be at the core of our understanding of Scriptural authority and interpretation. Jesus calls us to place the love of God and others above all partisan positions, revealing a higher, more holistic vision of the kingdom."
