Elsewhere on the 'net....

A right-wing UMC pastor claimed if we change our position on sexual orientation, "80 percent" of his congregation would leave. I questioned why he believed that was so, and he failed to respond. He represents a wealthy suburb, where hating on the gays is a safe outlet for the affluent to demonize those who threaten their worldview in which their affluence is evidence of their quality as persons. While no doubt his church would indeed decline at a rate higher than say an urban church with accepted LGBT members, I believe his claim was hyperbolic. I'm certainly willing to call his bluff. As Davy Crockett was reported to have said, "Be sure you're right, then go ahead." I certainly am. Being Southern Baptists Lite is not what I want the UMC to be. If it means we become smaller for the immediate future, it's a risk well worth taking. No person with a well-founded faith would act on such a threat. I pray they find peace, but that's hard when one's heart is overcome with rancor.
