Bishops' Proposal Garners Range of Responses

All the bosses are missing the point, the reality, the future!

I am a “traditionalist” as it’s called, but, I think the “traditionalist” position as described here and seemingly promoted by the WCA and others, more or less, is going NOWHERE.

I am also a REALIST. I understand that the liberals are not going to change or accept any traditionalist leaning vote. I doubt we conservative traditionalists will accept any “progressive” vote like “one church” (where every single church decides whatever is moral, Christian, good, bad, etc…), but all UMC churches are still connected? So, a traditionalist church in a progressive conference gets a gay bishop and then pressure to perform gay marriages, then has to decide whether or not to accept the "trans" preacher the progressive conference decides to send? What could go wrong? Seriously! There is no way to organize this chaos!

Bishops, especially the retired bishops, want the “one church” idea to succeed to protect retirements. I am pained by their situation, but we can find ways to treat them fairly. However, we who worry more about the future churches, we see two separate churches, two independent churches where both sides can define their own rules and rites, and focus on our mission of service and representing our Lord.

We traditionalists must recognize that the world around us is changing. Perhaps we must retreat and reorganize to continue to live and worship within our values and traditions. You progressives need to understand that you have the power to change things, but do not expect our respect, support, money or membership in the adventure. "Go Your Own Way".

The Way Forward

I agree 100% with Reese. When the church starts amending he Bible to accommodate secular views, where does it end? If that happens it's time for a new church. Remember, Jesus said "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, and only a few find it.…

Only 2 solutions

I hope this issue is finally put to rest. However, from my perspective, the only solutions are to : 1 Adhere to and enforce the current discipline or 2 Split the church. Otherwise, I agree there is no way to avoid chaos. My wife and I had a conversation just this past weekend about where we'd be going to church if anything other than those two options is chosen. I cannot, in good faith, support via attendance or finances any church that promotes non-scriptural practices.

Bishop Kenneth L. Carder "Those who use hate-filled tactics to 'defend truth'" whether in politics or religion, betray the essence of truth. Truth and love are conjoined twins giving life to one another. They are heart and brain working in concert; severing them means death to both."
