Church Separation Calmly Considered

Interesting points.

Long story short: in 20 years this'll be a dead issue anyhow. People who now spew hatred against LGBTQ people are going be denying they ever did, just like Whites who spewed hatred against Blacks were denying they ever did by 1985.

But it is true people now, including some UMCers in the seventies and eighties, in places like Gadsen, Alabama or Lucas, Kansas, would support removing that horrible "practice of homosexuality" language, as long as they don't have to say so in front of haters they know. If we get to decide which way to go by secret ballot, we will find progressive voices from Bend, Oregon, to Sarasota, Florida.

Notable Quotes

"The Judicial Council’s work compellingly shows that our denomination is in schism and has been for some years and if we really want to heal this schism, then (dare I say it?) we have to back up and try our best to answer basic questions. What is it, actually, that unites United Methodists? ...  If doctrines do not define church, then we don’t know our identity or mission. If we don’t know our identity and mission, we will never be able to agree on what constitutes appropriate or inappropriate behavior and we will never be able to exercise meaningful accountability."

– The Rev. Steven Rankin, in a post "Judicial Council Proves We're Already in Schism"
