Why 2019?

As an outsider who has been following the travails of the UMC, I do not understand what is to be gained by a special General Conference so close to the one held every four years. Conferences are not inexpensive undertakings and take people's time and preparation.

1. I suspect no conference is going to adopt a "liberalized" position at this point.

2. The only "reform" that might pass is something that allows each congregation to go their own way as with the Baptists or a formal division of the UMC.

3. I suspect the most likely event will be for the conference to reject all changes. The definition of "conservative" is, after all, one that does not wish to alter the status quo.

Conservative

Conservative = Not willing to alter the Clear wording of Scipture, not willing to make repentance cheap and willing to live a life of holiness after repentance by the help of the Holy Spirit.

"Fundamentalist Christians have moved the theological needle so far to the right that the Gospel is said by them to be a 'progressive agenda.' It's not – it's the Gospel. We must keep preaching Jesus' message of the Kingdom of God (over against the kingdoms of this world) rooted in love (not legalism) and aimed toward reconciliation (not division). The Pharisees alleged Jesus' message was a 'liberal agenda.' It wasn't – it was the Gospel."
