Bud has a good article but it is laced with unintended irony. Only the 1st century Jews and Christians expressed consistent moral opposition to abortion and homosexual behavior, positions that caused the larger and sophisticated pagan culture to laugh them off as clueless, rigid or stupid. And...early Christians also insisted Jesus was the only way to God, as God incarnate, and experienced bodily resurrection, further examples of the exclusionary and intellectually laughable odd religion called Christianity. And...their insistence on care for the poor and opposition to military service also struck others as misplaced or unpatriotic (i.e., on Jesus, not Caesar, is Lord). First we must be willing to let the witness of the first Christians kick us in our shins before we aim kicks at others...whether left or right.

Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove "When Jesus said, 'I have come that they might have life, and have it more abundantly' in John 10:10, he wasn’t thinking about a victory for those who have used religion to fight back against the gains of the civil rights movement. Jesus was inviting all of us to work together for the vision at the heart of that movement — a beloved community where all people created in God’s image can thrive."
