Jigsaw Puzzle? Really?

The Rev. Thomas Lambrecht compared the work of the Commission on a Way Forward as like putting a jigsaw puzzle together. While it is true that there are many pieces that need to come together in order to find a successful way to move beyond where we are today, I believe that his metaphor is myopic. A jigsaw puzzle is a two-dimensional photograph, cut into many complicated, yet similar shapes - similar enough to make it very confusing. However, the UMC is a multi-dimensional body of Christ-followers - disciples. Two dimensions speak to me as an either/or option, which in my opinion is not a way forward. Such an approach leaves only options of "shall I stay, shall I go," to quote a song about a ruptured relationship.
In a multi-dimensional world - the one in which we live - there is room for disagreement and the holy conferencing (not the heated emotional outbursts we have all witnessed) which allows us to understand one another more fully and love one another more deeply.
Throw away the jigsaw puzzle and get out the Tinker Toys. Please, please, please, see the fuller view of how a Way Forward can begin to take shape. May God richly bless the work of this Commission!
