There have been times that orthodoxy ran amuck

But that does not mean we should trash orthodoxy! Over the last few years I have been exposed to orthodoxy via the Heidelberg Catechism, three very modern books about the Heidelberg as well as the writings of John Wesley. I am finally standing in the wide open space of God's amazing grace. I have no desire to enslave anybody, burn any body at the stake, overtake the Holy Land by brute force, or be part of an anything resembling the Inquisition or what has become known as orthodox fundamentalism--two things you left off your list--because these are very much an aberration of true orthodoxy. I also have no desire to berate or otherwise harm a person who is struggling with same sex attraction or who comes up with their own understanding of sexuality. However, I do consider the current progressive view of sexuality as being outside the norm of orthodoxy and therefore I have no desire to share a church with them because our beliefs cancel each other out. As a result the church has absolutely nothing to say to anybody! A Wesleyan/Methodist understanding of the catholic spirit -- which is believe and let believe does not mean we should try to maintain conflicting beliefs within a single faith tradition.
