Bishops' Action Leads to Questions

Moving Sideways

Prior to the initial 'fight' in General Convention, the popular choices regarding sexuality were essentially: status quo, full inclusion, one/connectional church.

After General Convention the essential options were: status quo, full inclusion, one/connectional church.

After The Way Forward Commission, the essential options were: status quo, full inclusion (still by popular demand), one/connectional church.

After the Bishop review: status quo, full inclusion (by popular demand), one/connectional church.

I see no progress. What I do see is a lot of wasted time and money, as the Powers That Be continue to avoid the topic of GLBT inclusion.

Only two things are clear: bigotry persists in the UMC, and white males still rule.

Bishops' action

If the bishops do not know what they agreed to do how can they explain it to the rest of us? A leadership failure on their part. If the special GC goes sideways we will have a real mess to contend with at GC 2020.

Notable Quotes

“The present proposed divorce in the UMC is not about sexual morality or justice and inclusion. It is about who is in charge. The 2019 Special Called General Conference gave the ‘traditionalists’ everything they wanted regarding gay weddings and ordinations. But they are still leaving. ... Splitting the church is never about anything but who holds authority.”
