What are the facts?

"Preserving unity until the special session of General Conference, to be held Feb. 23-26, 2019 in St. Louis, is the faithful thing to do, the letter writers say."

Where did the writers say this? It's not in the letter. I definitely agree that no one should leave prior to February 2019. However, my biggest concern is that a conference like the South Georgia conference that has no truly metropolitan areas, and consequently few progressives, will vote to leave. I'm not sure if that is possible. But my understanding of our organization would indicate that its a 51% vote of the annual conference. That first conference that votes to leave would be big as each successive conference knows that that there are other conferences to unite with if they choose to leave.

This is the reason that the Connectional Conference plan is the best choice, although the hardest to pass. Traditionalists have signed on to that approach which gives traditional congregations the necessary space and offers promotions to leadership within the church for traditionalists. One of our big problems is that leaders continue to lead even if they aren't promoted and we end up with all these outside organizations that are working against us. Those go away in the Connectional Conference structure.

The South Georgia Conference

At annual conference this June voted by a very substantial majority to support the current language in the BOD with greater enforceability provisions. A sizeable number of congregations will in my opinion begin to wither with greater acceleration if any alternative plan is adopted. Unity simply for the sake of unity just isn't that strong of a rallying cry at this point in the life of the dis-United Methodist Church.

Connectional Conference

What would be your argument against the Connectional Conference Plan?

Too difficult to pass

I understand the Connectional Conference Plan would require a sizeable number of constitutional amendments that likely cannot reach the 2/3 vote threshold to pass. I would be, in my opinion, the alternative choice as between the three likely to be considered, but the voting threshold is likely a practical barrier. Nonetheless, nothing is too difficult for God.
