UMC: Telegraphing

Bizarre article

I confess I totally mystified by this article. I've read all of the WCA pronouncements, and I'm unaware of any covert messaging. Maybe the author of this article has gnostic insights which the rest of us lack? Th WCA has spoken with clarity and conviction on all facets of the challenges facing the GC19. Perhaps the author is the only person in the UMC who believes that the current state of our church is something we should want to preserve.

This is not news.

"making it increasingly clear... that they do not want The United Methodist Church as it currently exists."

Name one person who is aware of the current schism and does want the UMC as it currently exists.

Priorities

I think the WCA has been really clear that they think this is a big deal. The Western and Northeast Jurisdiction, and significant elements of all jurisdictions have said this is a big deal. The concept of a gracious exit is very foreign to Methodist thinking, IMO. But what is not foreign is the idea that the annual conference is the organizing entity. Westpath seems to think that an annual conference could leave the UMC. That's the only way out. If the One Church plan passes, then the question becomes does any conference leave. That's a big decision. I find it hard to think one would leave, but its not Mt Bethel's conference that will leave first. I'd be looking at one of the Texas conferences or the South Georgia conference. If they left, then I think it could cascade. But would it?

The North Georgia Conference wasn't polled on what the annual conference delegates would do if most of the conferences around them had formed a new entity.

Tremendous number of open questions. I think some of what the author is observing in WCA's statements is the high hurdle it would require to actual form a new denomination.

What the WCA is after

Freedom to practice Christianity the way they see fit and not be forced to endorse beliefs they are not in agreement with. If they have that, then you will have the freedom to practice Christianity as you see fit without expending so much time and energy criticizing those who disagree with you.

Telegraphing

I think the WCA has been very open about what they are doing. If there is telegraphing then I need the WCA decoder ring and someone to teach me the secret handshake. I want in.
