Go Back to Go Forward

Instead of the Way Forward, the United Methodist Church might consider The Way Back. It might consider the way back to reason, tolerance, understanding, and acceptance of those of our family members, friends, neighbors, and fellow church members from all walks, professions, and occupations of life who listen and march to the drum beat of a difference drummer. Jesus did. If this doesn't work, the motto, OPEN HEARTS, OPEN MINDS, OPEN DOORS, is an empty and meaningless expression. Unless Church doors are open all the way, the Church has nothing more to offer to the human race than the local civic club on the corner. Furthermore, the word "split" is not a dirty word. It happens all the time with couples, businesses, and nations. Big is not always better. Question, what are the problems and complications if the United Methodist Church did split again? Just curious. John Wesley walked away from the Church of England and changed the world.

Amen!

Jesus was an observant Jew. How did we ever loose his way and perspective?

Jesus didn't reject people. He never preached about homosexuality at all. Why are we?

How did Christianity ever morph from an open, inviting, loving community into one of exclusion and hatred?

Neuhaus' Law and Beckwith's Corollary

Hope the way forward commission will keep this "law" and its corollary handy.
Neuhaus' Law - “Where orthodoxy is optional, orthodoxy will sooner or later be proscribed.”
Beckwith's Corrolary - "Whenever a practitioner of a traditional vice appeals to the right of privacy as the justification for the state to leave him alone to engage in that vice, he will inevitably demand that the state require that those who morally disapprove of his practice cooperate with it, either materially or formally."

"When one’s power, authority, or position is derived from demarcating and defending orthodoxy, then singling out more heretics is always necessary. The status one holds depends on maintaining loyalties and passing purity tests."

"The choice before every theologian and church leader is clear: either the tradition of the church tells us who we are, or we read the Scriptures in light of who we understand ourselves to be."

– Robert A. Hunt, Perkins School of Theology, in a Facebook post on Catholic bishops proposing to deny communion to President Joe Biden over his support for legal abortion.
