Sacramento, CA – Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño, resident Bishop of the San Francisco area and the administrative Bishop for the California-Nevada Conference of The United Methodist Church will continue to remain on suspension from her episcopal responsibilities following action on complaints filed against her with the Western Jurisdiction College of Bishops. Bishop Carcaño was initially placed under a 60-day suspension on March 8. During that time a Supervisory Committee of the Western Jurisdiction was charged with investigating complaints brought against her in an effort to find a just and equitable resolution agreeable to all parties.
That suspension, which expires on May 7th, was put in place to protect the well-being of the complainants, the Bishop, and the Church during the highly confidential process.
In recent action, Bishop Carcaño has filed an appeal with the Judicial Council related to the complaints. The grounds for the appeal have not been specified. This action places the complaint process on hold pending the Judicial Council's decision. As Bishop Carcaño was in a suspended status at the time of the appeal, the suspension continues at least until the appeal is decided.
Bishop Sally Dyck continues to lead the California-Nevada Annual Conference as the interim bishop.
