Bishop Laurie Haller, episcopal leader of the Iowa and Dakotas annual conferences, is recuperating at home after suffering a fall while running Feb. 16.
According to an email from the bishop's assistant, the Rev. Dr. Lanette L. Plambeck, "while out on a morning run, Bishop Laurie hit black ice and fell. This fall resulted in a wrist fracture and possible concussion."
An avid runner, Bishop Haller has competed in many races, including the Boston Marathon in 2017 (see photo at left). She was assigned to the Iowa Episcopal Area after her election to bishop in 2016 by the North Central Jurisdiction. In 2021 she was assigned administration of the Dakotas Area by the jurisdiction upon the retirement of Bishop Bruce Ough.
Bishop Haller is recuperating at home under the care of her spouse, the Rev. Gary Haller. She has been instructed by her doctor to avoid computer screens, so she won't be answering emails, Dr. Plambeck wrote in the email. Instead, cards may be sent to her in care of Iowa UMC Conference Center, 2301 Rittenhouse St., Des Moines, Iowa 50321.
