Delaying the inevitable

The bishops are now talking about trying to make the US a central conference so it can have it's own book of discipline allowing gay marriage and ordination. This is a retread of a constitutional amendment that got trounced in 2012 (or maybe 2008). They will never get the 3/4 vote necessary to make it happen. They are just delaying the inevitable. Why? The brand is so poisoned that it will take decades to recover. We are all better to split, assume new names and start doing the Lord's work. The bishops want to listen but Sue Haupert, bishop over one to the most conservative AC's (needs to get out of Atlanta) won't talk to conservative leader. That's the second bishop to make that claim (Stanovsky?). So much for listening to everyone! Let's stop the battle, chasing fantasies, accept reality, and get on with it so we can serve the Lord. This is affecting the people in the pews which is why income is down so much!

I agree

Rome wasn't built in a day...

But Jesus was killed in one.

It's a whole lot easier to blow things up than it is to build them - and the lack of foresight among various factions of the UMC has caused the whole house of cards to come tumbling down.

I think it's over. Some good might rise from the ashes here, but I'm not going to hold my breath for it. I'm mostly afraid that this whole debacle has not only killed the UMC, but individual churches, and even turned a lot of people off of organized religion. Well done, people, well done indeed.

[All the discussion about a 'new methodism' coming out of this is, I fear, too little too late.]

Jesus' words (Sermon on the Mount)

"What is required is serious obedience--doing what my Father wills. I can see it now--at the Final Judgment thousands strutting up to me and saying, 'Master, we preached the Message, we bashed the demons, our God-sponsored projects had everyone talking.' And do you jknow what I am going to say? 'You missed the boat. All you did was use me to make yourselves important. You don't impress me one bit. You're out of here.'
"These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life .... These are foundational words, words to build a life on. If you work these words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who built his house on solid rock. ..-- but nothing moved that house. It was fixed to the rock.
"But if you just use my word sin Bible studies and don't work them into your life, you are like a stupid carpenter who build his house on the sandy beach. When a storm rolled in ...., it collapsed like a house of cards."
