ST. ANSGAR, Iowa -- For the past 11 years, Saint Ansgar United Methodist Church has welcomed the community every Thursday morning, from Labor Day to Memorial Day, for its weekly Community Breakfast. From 7:00 to 9:00 a.m., the fellowship hall fills with the sound of conversation, the aroma of hot coffee, and the warmth of neighbors gathering together.
Attendance averages between 75 and 90 people each week, with guests representing more than 20 churches across a 12-mile radius of Saint Ansgar. What began as a simple meal has grown into a cherished tradition that fosters fellowship, friendship, and a sense of unity across congregations and the broader community.
The breakfast is made possible entirely by volunteers who donate their time and talents. In addition to preparing scrambled eggs and rotating selections of ham, bacon, or sausage, volunteers bring homemade baked goods, fresh fruit, juices, and plenty of coffee and tea.
Organizers admit there have been times when the effort felt overwhelming, but the steady turnout and enthusiastic support have kept the tradition alive. “The demand is so great that we just keep going,” said one volunteer.
Community members and visitors alike are invited to join. As organizers note, it’s more than just a meal—it’s a place to connect, share stories, and build lasting friendships.
The Community Breakfast is held each Thursday morning, 7:00–9:00 a.m., at Saint Ansgar United Methodist Church. All are welcome.
