Church Discipline

The church has a duty to God's Word. And of course, the Book of Discipline seeks to be faithful to God's Word. This man's situation of removal from a leadership role/job is consistent with the both Scripture and the BofD.

I will start with these verses I Cor 5: 9-11 "I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— v10 not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. v11 But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people."

The Book of Discipline emphasizes in many places our dependence upon God's Word. Homosexual sex is repeatedly and clearly taught as sinful in scripture. And in regards to a church member, it prescribes steps to take. In Paragraph 2702.3. on pg 789 A professing member of a local church may be charged with the following offenses.... (a) Immorality... (f) Sexual misconduct.

A church is properly more aggressive with leaders who are in sexual sin. Jesus even gives special admonition against those who would mis-lead a young child.

Aside from properly removing him from leadership, it is possible that the church is also pursuing church discipline against him as a member, but has not made the process public. And in fact, from God Word in I Cor 5:9-11, it would be sin if it fails to do so.

The Purpose of Rules

The Methodist General Rules go back to the early days of Methodism. Methodists have always been expected to follow some basic rules. Those who refuse to keep our Methodist way of life have found themselves in trouble and lost their association with our group. That is both for their own good and for the good of the group, that evil not spread through the group. Recall that Jesus taught His disciples to pray including "keep us from evil."
