May 18, 2025 – Fifth Sunday of Easter
Texts: Acts 11:1-18, Psalm 148, Revelation 21:1-6, John 13:31-35
In this season after Easter, we have a wide lens overview of the Book of Revelation. These scriptures offer profound hope for the trials of these days, with reminders like:
- Jesus will sit on the throne… not the powers of this world.
- Only Jesus is worthy to transform the world… not through violence, but through love.
- The church is a community of diversity, equality, and praise that serves the Lord.
John of Patmos looked around and saw all sorts of problems. Christians were being persecuted by Rome and some churches gave in to the lure of empire and sided with economic and national powers. Or they lost their early spark of faith and grew complacent. In both cases, they neglected their neighbors and forgot to share the good news of Jesus with those who were struggling.
But he received a vision that the world could be renewed. This isn’t God starting from scratch. It is about transformation and redemption. John has the blueprints of what it will look like when these renovations of heaven and earth are complete and reminds us of what the key features have always been and will always be.
First: God dwells with us. God walked in the garden with Adam and Eve.(1) God became flesh and lived among us.(2) The Holy Spirit is poured out upon us and lives within us.(3) And in this newly renovated creation, God moves into the neighborhood and is intimately connected to our lives.
Second: There will be an end to sorrow, pain, and death. Next week’s readings tell us of the Tree of Life whose leaves heal the world. We are reminded of the garden of creation where humanity had everything it needed for abundant life. In turning away from God, there were consequences: pain, violence, sweat and labor, death itself. God promises to renew and restore humanity and bring us back to a place of abundant life, health, and joy.
Third: We don’t have to wait to live this way. One consistent theme in the Book of Revelation is that we always have a choice. We can choose the powers of this world, or we can choose to live as servants of God here and now. As we pray the words Jesus taught us: “Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Or as theologian C. Wess Daniels reminds us: “revolution and redemption do not happen someplace else, they take place right here with the material of the world we live in.”(4) God is making all things new, all around us, every day.
This world is a chaotic mess. Millions are displaced by war and violence. Economic pressures are rising. The sins of racism, tribalism, and colonialism are ever-present. Preventable diseases are taking lives every day. Everywhere you turn, there is a story that will break your heart in two. And the words of Revelation feel just as important in this moment as ever before.
As followers of the Lamb, will we choose to embody God’s presence among our neighbors? Will we live out the command of Jesus to love one another? Will we let the Spirit lead us to people we might consider “others” and love and welcome them as God has loved and welcomed us?
It has been nearly a month since the death of Pope Francis, and I think about how he answered those questions in how he lived. As Cardinal Farrell shared when he announced his death, “he taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized.”(5) He regularly met with transgender people, called and prayed nightly with a Catholic community in Gaza, and washed the feet of prisoners. Instead of judgment or doctrine, he approached each person as a child of God and offered pastoral care and personal touch.
We believe that God is in the business of transforming pain and sorrow through the power of love, lived out in real relationships with those who are hurting or excluded. As the testimony of Peter reflects – when we reach out in love, we open a door for the Spirit to work. And by these actions, the world will know that we are disciples of Christ and followers of the Lamb.

Todas Cosas Renovadas
In esta temporada después del domingo de la Resurrección, tenemos un resumen del libro del Apocalipsis con lente gran angular. Estas escrituras ofrecen esperanza profunda para los problemas de aquellos días, con acuerdos como:
1. Jesús se sentará en el trono – no serán los poderes de este mundo.
2. Solamente Jesús es digno para transformar el mundo . . . no mediante violencia, sino mediante amor.
3. La iglesia es una comunidad de diversidad, igualdad, y alabanza que sirve al Señor.
Juan de Patmos miró en todas partes y vio toda clase de problemas. Cristianos sufrían persecución por Roma y algunas iglesias se rindieron a la tentación del imperio y apoyaron a los poderes económicos y nacionales. O, perdieron su chispa de fe primitiva y se hicieron autocomplacientes. En ambos casos, desatendieron a sus vecinos y olvidaron compartir las buenas nuevas de Jesús con los que tenían dificultades.
Pero recibió una visión que el mundo podría ser renovado. Esto no es Dios empezando de cero. Trata con transformación y redención. Juan tiene los planos de cómo aparecerá cuando estas renovaciones del cielo y de la tierra somo completas y nos acuerda de lo que siempre han sido y siempre serán las características claves.
Primero: Dios mora con nosotros. Dios caminó en el jardín con Adán y Eva.1 Dios se hizo carne y habitó entre nosotros.2 El Espíritu Santo se derrama sobre nosotros y vive dentro de nosotros.3 Y en esta creación nuevamente renovada, Dios se muda al barrio y es íntimamente conectado a nuestras vidas.
Segundo: Habrá un fin a la tristeza, dolor, y muerte. Las lecturas para la próxima semana nos hablan del Árbol de la Vida cuyas hojas sanan al mundo. Somos acordados del jardín de creación donde la humanidad tenía todo que necesitaba para la vida abundante. En apartándose de Dios, había consecuencias: dolor, violencia, sudor y labor, y aún la muerte. Dios promete renovar y restaurar a la humanidad y traernos otra vez a un lugar de vida abundante, salud, y alegría.
Tercero: No tenemos que esperar paras vivir en esta manera. Un tema consistente en el libro del Apocalipsis es que siempre tenemos opción. Podemos escoger los poderes de este mundo o podemos vivir como sirvientes de Dios aquí y ahora. Como oramos las palabras que Jesús nos enseñó: “Venga tu reino. Hágase tu voluntad.” O como nos acuerda el teólogo C. Wess Daniels: “revolución y redención no ocurren en otro lugar, ocurren aquí mismo con el material del mundo en que vivimos.”4 Dios está haciendo nuevas todas las cosas, en todas partes, todo los días.
Este mundo es un lío caótico. Millones de personas son desplazadas por guerra y violencia. Presiones económicas surgen. Los pecados del racismo, tribalismo, y colonialismo, siempre son presentes. Enfermedades evitables toman vidas cada día. En todas parte, hay una historia que quebrantará tu corazón. Y las palabras de Apocalipsis siente tan importantes en este momento como en momentos en el pasado.
Como seguidores del Cordero, ¿escogeremos la presencia de Dios entre nuestros vecinos? Viviremos el mandamiento de Jesús que nos amemos unos a otros? ¿Dejaremos que el Espíritu nos conduzca a personas que es posible que consideremos como “otros” y podemos amarlos y darles la bienvenida como Dios nos ha amado y nos ha dado la bienvenida?
Ya ha sido casi un mes desde la muerte del Papa Francisco, y pienso en cómo contestó estas preguntas en cómo vivió. Como el Cardenal Farrell dijo cuando anunció su muerte, “nos enseñó a vivir los valores del Evangelio con fidelidad, valor, y amor universal, especialmente a favor de los más pobres y los que están en los márgenes.”5 Regularmente se reunía cono personas transgéneras, llamaba y oraba cada noche con una comunidad católica en Gaza, y lavaba los pies de prisioneros . En vez de juicio o doctrina, se acercó a cada persona como hijo/a de Dios y ofrecía cuidado pastoral y toque personal.
Creemos que Dios trata con transformar dolor y pena mediante el poder del amor, que es vivido en relaciones verdaderas con los que tienen dolor o son excluidas. Como el testimonio de Pedro refleja – cuando alcanzamos en amor, abrimos una puerta para que el Espíritu obre. Y por estas acciones, el mundo sabrá que somos discípulos de Cristo y seguidores del Cordero.
