Ruth 3:1-5; 4:13-17 • Psalm 127 OR Psalm 43 (UMH 777) • Hebrews 9:24-28 • Mark 12:38-44
Blessings come to us in many different ways. Some blessings we recognize in the moment while others might take a million breaths before we realize the blessing that came to us…once upon a time. For Naomi, a blessing came from her daughter-in-law, Ruth.
I know you recall the Old Testament story. There was a famine in the land so Elimelech took his family – Naomi, his wife, Mahlon and Kilion his sons and their wives Orpah and Ruth to Moab – to live out the famine. In a period of ten years, Elimelech and his two sons died leaving Naomi with her daughter-in-laws. Naomi counsels her daughter-in-laws to return to their homes so that they might once again find husbands. Orpah sadly kisses Naomi and leaves, but Ruth clings to her and refuses to leave her. At first glance, it doesn’t look much like a blessing. Does it? Fortunately, the story doesn’t end here.
The second half of the story has the nuance of an old tv show called the Dating Game. Only in our story, Naomi has specific instructions for Ruth to follow to catch the eye of Boaz, a kinsman. Naomi had been noticing how Ruth has found favor with Boaz, in a crafty way. You know the rest of the story and the genealogy of David is set in motion. Naomi is cared for. Ruth is loved and Boaz has a devoted wife and eventually an heir. All three of the main characters of this story have received blessings!*
Blessing or blessings is and are the connecting dot(s) to Mark's passage. Jesus and his disciples are at the temple praying, visiting and all the while, Jesus focuses on what people are contributing to the temple treasury. Mark does not say he is taking notes nor is he standing up, banging on the pulpit, if there was one, imploring people to give more. He is simply watching. At the right time, a poor widow comes and puts two copper coins into the treasury bucket. They are only worth a fraction of a penny. Now, here is the whole reason for their temple outing. Jesus tells his disciples that the rich who gave that day gave out of their wealth, but the widow gave out of her poverty all that she had. Jesus does not condemn the wealthy for what they gave. What they gave was probably needed. He also doesn’t say that he wished the widow would have just given one copper to the temple.
Where does the blessing go? You already know. Don’t you. The blessing goes to the widow. Why? Because she gave all that she had. There was no showboating, no weeping, and, as far as we can see into the passage, no regret on her part. The widow puts her life totally in God’s hands believing and trusting God. What a blessing. (Psalm 37:1-7).

Las Bendiciones Vienen en Muchas Maneras
Las bendiciones vienen a nosotros en muchas maneras diferentes. Algunas reconocemos en el momento mientras que es posible que otras nos cuesten un millón de respiraciones antes de que nos demos cuente de la bendición que vino a nosotros . . . hace mucho tiempo. Para Noemí, una bendición vino a ella de su nuera, Rut.
Sé que Ud. se acuerda de la historia en el Antiguo Testamento. Había hambruna en la tierra así que Elimelec tomó a su familia – Noemí, su esposa, Mahlón y Quelión sus hijos y sus esposas Orfa y Rut a Moab – para vivir durante el hambruna. En un período de diez años, Elimelec y sus dos hijos murieron dejando a Noemía con sus nueras. Noemí le aconseja a sus nueras que regresen a sus casas para que puedan encontrar esposos. Orfa besa a Noemí tristemente y sale, pero Rut se quedó con ella y niega a salir. A primera vista, no parece como una bendición, ¿verdad? Afortunadamente, la historia no termina aquí.
La segunda mitad de la historia tiene la matiz de un viejo programa de televisión nombrado “El Juego de Citas.” Pero en nuestra historia, Noemí tiene instrucciones específicas que Rut ha de seguir para llamar la atención de Booz, un pariente. Noemí había notado cómo Rut había encontrado favor con Booz, en una manera astuta. Ya sabe el resto de la historia y la genealogía de David ya es puesta en moción. Noemí recibe cuidado. Rut es amada y Booz tiene una esposa leal y eventualmente un heredero. ¡Los tres personajes principales de esta historia todos han recibido bendiciones!*
La bendición o bendiciones es/son los puntos que nos conectan a la lectura de Marcos. Jesús y sus discípulos están en el templo orando, visitando, y todo el tiempo, Jesús se enfoca en lo que la gente contribuye a la tesorería del templo. Marcos no dice que Jesús toma apuntes ni se para dar golpes en el púlpito, si hubiera uno, implorando que la gente diera más dinero. Simplemente observa. En el momento oportuno, una viuda pobre viene y echa dos monedas de cobre a la tesorería. Son valen una fracción de un centavo. Ahora, tenemos toda la razón por visitar el templo. Jesús les dice a sus discípulos que los ricos que dieron ese día ofrecieron fuera de sus riquezas, pero la viuda ofreció todo lo que tenía en su pobreza. Jesús no condena a los ricos por lo que ofrecieron. Lo que dieron probablemente era necesario. Tampoco dice que esperaba que la viuda solamente habría dado una moneda de cobre al templo.
¿Adónde va la bendición? Ya sabe Ud., ¿verdad? La bendición va la viuda. ¿Por qué? Porque ofreció todo que tenía. No había fanfarroneas, ni lágrimas, como podemos ver en la lectura, no hay remordimiento de parta de la viuda. La viuda pone su vida totalmente en las manos de Dios creyendo y confiando de Dios. ¡Qué bendición! (Salmos 37:1-7).
