August 2, 2026 – Tenth Sunday after Pentecost
Matthew 14:13-21
The Matthew 14:13-21 passage relates one of the most well-known of Jesus’ miracles: the feeding of the five thousand with only five loaves and two fish. More than a supernatural act, this event reveals the love, the compassion, and the power of God.
The story begins when Jesus withdraws to a deserted place after learning of John the Baptist's death. However, a great multitude follows him. Even though he was going through a time of sadness, Jesus did not reject the people. On the contrary, he felt compassion for them. He healed the sick and attended to their needs. This attitude teaches us that love of neighbor can lead us to serve – even in the midst of our own difficulties. In other words, the pain, the sadness, transforms into a means of love and hope for other people who are in the midst of need and suffering.
As evening fell, the disciples worried because the multitude didn’t have anything to eat. Their solution was to send the crowds away so that they could buy food. But Jesus responded: “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” These words seemed impossible, since they could only count on five loaves and two fish. Nevertheless, God is not limited by the quantity of resources that are available; God works via faith and the ability of those who trust in Him. Jesus took the bread and fish, raised his eyes to heaven, gave thanks to God, and began to distribute them. What seemed insufficient was multiplied miraculously so that it fed the multitude. Everyone ate and was satisfied, and afterwards they gathered twelve baskets full of broken pieces that were left over. This detail demonstrates that God not only supplies our needs, but also provides an abundance to give to the rest. I remember when I was small, my mother, with many limitations, fed my sisters and brothers and was even able to help others in the neighborhood. In Latin America, there is a well-known saying (throw more water into the soup) as a way of reaching everyone. Jesus continues doing miracles! This miracle has a profound teaching for the Christian life. Many times we think that what we have is very little to make a difference: little time, few resources, few abilities, or little faith. Nevertheless, Jesus teaches us that if we put what little we have in His hands, He can transform it into a great blessing. What is important is not the quantity, but rather the willingness to trust and obey.
We also learn the value of gratitude. Before performing the miracle, Jesus gave thanks for what seemed insufficient. This example invites us to give thanks to God for what we already have, trusting that God can do much more than we can imagine. Today many people live believing that they will never have enough: not enough money, not enough ability, not enough faith, not enough time, not enough opportunities. But the miracle of the loaves teaches that God never works with what is lacking to us; God works with what we put in God’s hands. Five loaves were sufficient. Do fish were sufficient. A small offering, when it is given with faith, can become a blessing for thousands.
Nowadays, this passage continues to be a message of hope for those who confront economic, family, or spiritual difficulties. It reminds us that God knows our needs and never arrives late. God’s power continues being the same, and God continues working on behalf of those who put their trust in God.
In conclusion, this story invites us to believe that God can transform our limitations into opportunities to manifest God’s glory. Just as he multiplied five loaves and two fish to feed thousands of people, he also multiplies our talents, our efforts, and our resources when we put them in God’s hands with faith. This miracle challenges us to trust fully in the Lord, to live with gratitude, and to remember that, for God, nothing is impossible. Besides, Christ continues taking broken lives, limited resources, and tired hearts to transform them into instruments of blessing. Just as five loaves and two fish fed thousands of people, your faith, your obedience, and your willingness can become the miracle that someone else is hoping for. I invite you to put all you have in the hands of God, and God will continue doing miracles in your life and in the life of others.

Cinco Panes, Dos Peces y un Dios de Milagros

El pasaje de Mateo 14:13-21 relata uno de los milagros más conocidos de Jesús: la alimentación de más de cinco mil personas con solo cinco panes y dos peces. Más que un acto sobrenatural, este acontecimiento revela el amor, la compasión y el poder de Dios.
La historia comienza cuando Jesús se retira a un lugar apartado tras conocer la muerte de Juan el Bautista. Sin embargo, una gran multitud lo sigue. Aunque atravesaba un momento de tristeza, Jesús no rechazó a la gente; por el contrario, sintió compasión por ellos, sanó a los enfermos y atendió sus necesidades. Esta actitud nos enseña que el amor al prójimo puede llevarnos a servir incluso en medio de nuestras propias dificultades. En otras Palabras el dolor, la tristeza, se convierte en un medio de amor y esperanza, para otras personas que están en medio de necesidades o sufrimientos.
Al caer la tarde, los discípulos se preocuparon porque la multitud no tenía qué comer. Su solución fue despedir a la gente para que comprara alimentos. Pero Jesús respondió: "No tienen necesidad de irse; dadles vosotros de comer." Estas palabras parecían imposibles, ya que solo contaban con cinco panes y dos peces. Sin embargo, Dios no se limita por la cantidad de recursos disponibles; Él obra a través de la fe y de la disposición de quienes confían en Él. Jesús tomó los panes y los peces, levantó los ojos al cielo, dio gracias a Dios y comenzó a repartirlos. Lo que parecía insuficiente fue multiplicado milagrosamente hasta alimentar a toda la multitud. Todos comieron hasta quedar satisfechos, y al finalizar se recogieron doce canastas llenas de los pedazos que sobraron. Este detalle demuestra que Dios no solo suple nuestras necesidades, sino que también provee con abundancia, para dar a los demás, recuerdo cuando era pequeña, mi madre con muchas limitaciones nos daba de comer a mis hermanas y hermanos y a aun alcanzaba para alguien más del vecindario. En latinoamérica hay un dicho muy conocido (echale mas agua a la sopa) a modo a que alcance para todos. Jesus sigue haciendo milagros !
Este milagro tiene una profunda enseñanza para la vida cristiana. Muchas veces pensamos que lo que tenemos es muy poco para hacer una diferencia: poco tiempo, pocos recursos, pocas habilidades o poca fe. Sin embargo, Jesús nos enseña que cuando ponemos lo poco que tenemos en sus manos, Él puede convertirlo en una gran bendición. Lo importante no es la cantidad, sino la disposición para confiar y obedecer.
También aprendemos el valor de la gratitud. Antes de realizar el milagro, Jesús dio gracias por aquello que parecía insuficiente. Este ejemplo nos invita a agradecer a Dios por lo que ya tenemos, confiando en que Él puede hacer mucho más de lo que alcanzamos a imaginar.Hoy existen muchas personas que viven creyendo que nunca tendrán suficiente: suficiente dinero, suficiente capacidad, suficiente fe, suficiente tiempo o suficientes oportunidades. Pero el milagro de los panes enseña que Dios nunca trabaja con lo que nos falta; Él trabaja con lo que ponemos en sus manos. Cinco panes fueron suficientes. Dos peces fueron suficientes. Una pequeña ofrenda, cuando es entregada con fe, puede convertirse en una bendición para miles.
En la actualidad, este pasaje sigue siendo un mensaje de esperanza para quienes enfrentan dificultades económicas, familiares o espirituales. Nos recuerda que Dios conoce nuestras necesidades y que nunca llega tarde. Su poder continúa siendo el mismo, y Él sigue obrando en favor de quienes depositan su confianza en Él.
En conclusión, esta historia nos invita a creer que Dios puede transformar nuestras limitaciones en oportunidades para manifestar su gloria. Así como multiplicó cinco panes y dos peces para alimentar a miles de personas, también puede multiplicar nuestros talentos, esfuerzos y recursos cuando los ponemos en sus manos con fe. Este milagro nos desafía a confiar plenamente en el Señor, a vivir con gratitud y a recordar que, para Dios, no existen imposibles. Además , Cristo continúa tomando vidas rotas, recursos limitados y corazones cansados para convertirlos en instrumentos de bendición. Así como cinco panes y dos peces alimentaron a miles de personas, tu fe, tu obediencia y tu disposición pueden convertirse en el milagro que alguien más está esperando. Les invito a que pongan todo lo que tienen en las manos de Dios y seguirá haciendo milagros en tu vida y en la vida de los demás.
