Aug. 23, 2020 Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost (Year A)
Exodus 1:8-2:10 Psalm 124 (UMH 846) Isaiah 51:1-6 Romans 12:1-8 Matthew 16:13-20
“God is waiting for us…our living is not a private affair of the individual. Living is what an individual does with God’s time, what an individual does with God’s word…the souls of individuals are candles of the Lord, lit on the cosmic way…and every soul is indispensable to God.” – A.J.Heschel, “I Asked For Wonder”
Have you thought about it all? God is waiting for you and me. As A.J. Heschel writes, “Individuals are needed. They are needed by God” (ibid.). As Jesus was the light of the world, Jesus commands you and me to let our light shine before people where ever they are”… that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven” (Mt.5:16).
The scriptures are full of examples of people daring to let their light shine. Moses’ birth and early life would have never come about had it not been for the light of five courageous women.
The disciples puzzled over the question Jesus asked, ”Who do you say that I am?” To this very day they might still be scratching their heads while trying to come up with the right answer had it not been for Peter’s exclamation, ”You are the Christ!” Even though the light of Peter’s candle was almost extinguished by the winds of fear, it never died. His light grew stronger and stronger as he gave witness to Jesus Christ’s resurrection. His light shined the way for people to believe and confess that Jesus was the Son of God and their Savior.
Paul’s world of darkness diminished when he had a transforming experience and met the risen Christ on the road to Damascus. Being well versed in the holy scriptures of Judaism in his day, Paul realized,”…the Lord is my light, my salvation” (Ps.27:1) was in reference to Jesus Christ. Paul’s transformation and confession, stoked the flames of his candle and his mission to preach the gospel of the risen Christ and salvation. As it was with Peter, Paul’s witness, flamed by the Holy Spirit, brought the light of Christ to shine within the hearts of men and women across the known world of his day.
Throughout our lives the light we carry shines brighter or grows dimmer depending upon the choices we make as we live out our faith. Eli Wiesel, was asked once how he could believe in God while he was in the death camp. He replied,” I didn’t have to believe, I knew.” “Let you light so shine…”

“Dios nos espera . . . nuestras vidas no son asunto privado del individuo. El vivir es lo que un individuo hace con el tiempo de Dios, lo que un individuo hace con la palabra de Dios . . . los almas de individuos son vela del Señor, encendidas en el camino cósmico . . . y cada alma es indispensable a Dios.” – A. ¿Ha pensado jamás en el asunto? Dios nos espera a Ud. y a mí. Como A. J. Heschel escribe, “Individuos son necesitados. Son necesitados por Dios.” (ibid.) Como Jesús era la luz del mundo, Jesús manda que Ud. y yo permitamos que nuestra luz brille delante de personas no importa donde estén” . . . que puedan ver sus buena obras y glorifiquen a Dios que está en los cielos.” (Mateo 5:16).
Las escrituras son llenas de ejemplos de personas atreviéndose a permitir que su luz brille. El nacimiento y las primeras partes de su vida jamás habrían ocurrido si no hubieran actuado dinco mujeres valientes.
Los discípulos rumiaban sobre la pregunta que Jesús hizo: “¿Quién decís que soy yo?” Hasta hoy es posible que todavía estarían rumiando mientras intentando elaborar la respuesta correcta si Pedro no hubiera exclamado, “¡Tú eres el Cristo!” Aunque la luz de la vela de Pedro casi fue extinguida por los vientos de miedo, jamás se apagó. Su luz creció más y más fuerte como dio testimonio a la resurrección de Jesucristo. Su luz brillaba y mostró el camino para que personas pudieran creer y testificar que Jesús era el Hijo de Dios y su Salvador.
El mundo de oscuridad de Pablo disminuyó cuando él tuvo una experiencia de transformación y se encontró con el Cristo resucitado en el camino a Damasco. Siendo muy versado en las escrituras sagradas del Judaísmo en su día, Pablo se dio cuenta de que, “ . . . Jehová es mi luz y mi salvación” (Salmos 27:1) era en referencia a Jesucristo. La transformación y la confesión de Pablo avivaron las llamas de su vela y su misión de predicar el evangelio del Cristo resucitado y la salvación. Como fue con Pedro, el testigo de Pablo, provocado por el Espíritu Santo, trajo la luz de Cristo para brillar dentro de los corazones de hombres y mujeres en todas partes del mundo conocido en su día.
Durante todas nuestras vidas la luz que llevamos brilla más o brilla menos depende de las selecciones que hacemos como vivimos nuestra fe. Eli Wiesel recibió la pregunta una vez cómo podía creer en Dios mientras que estaba en el campo de exterminio. Respondió, “No tenía que creer, yo sabía.” “Que tu luz brille . . .”
