Fourth Sunday of Advent, Dec. 18, 2022  – Matthew 1:18-25

Some images relative to the Advent/Christmas story are fixed in my mind because of numerous repetitions through the years. They relate the birth narratives of Jesus and how the story has been part of my history.  I refer primarily to the number of Christmas pageants I have participated in or attended through years as a child growing up in the church, as an adult, and as a parent and pastor observing such programs.  I have seen Mary and Joseph arrive at Bethlehem, heard of an innkeeper denying them room, seen three kings come from afar bearing gifts that have puzzled me at times, heard of the shepherds being startled on the hillside, seen a manger in a stable, and imagined the feeling a bed of straw.  I have imagined the costumes – many of which were actually bathrobes worn by participating children. I have pictured in my mind Mary as a young maiden whose piety is obvious as she kneels at the manger/cradle gazing at her newborn son. Standing by her side was Joseph, whom as I pictured as a young man not much older than Mary.  I also remember seeing my granddaughter portray the baby Jesus when she was two weeks old.

Of course, now I realize that much that has been depicted in those pageants is not accurate according to the gospel accounts in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. There is no mention of kings, but wise men whose number is not specified.  Later tradition has given them names and numbers. The gospels make no mention of animals on that birth night, but they show up in pageants anyway. There is no mention of an innkeeper.  It is highly unlikely that wise men and shepherds all arrived at the same time and the same place. Early extra-biblical traditions suggest that Joseph was much older than Mary, and that he was married before and already had some children. Though it is not mentioned in scripture I suspect that the relationship between Joseph and Mary may have been an arranged betrothal in which Mary may have had no say.

What I try to keep in mind is that though the pageants I have observed and participated in, along with the carols I have sung that reiterated some of the same things may have had some inconsistencies, they have still been formative for me in my faith journey and still are important to me.  I have grown in my relationship with God through getting caught up in the stories and the retelling of the stories.  They have been important stopping places on my journey, and without them my faith would be diminished.

The story in Matthew 1:18-25 tells me some things about Joseph that the Christmas pageants generally do not mention. Joseph, though initially tempted to part company with the pregnant Mary, was receptive in a dream to another message – that the child was from God.  Joseph was to have a role in naming the child “Jesus” – “for he will save his people from their sins.” Another name is mentioned from the faith tradition – “and they shall name him Emmanuel” which means “God is with us.” Joseph gave Jesus his name – and thus proclaimed before others the legitimacy of the baby’s birth and of Mary’s place in the story. Others gave him the name “Emmanuel” to testify to his presence in their lives and on their journey.

The two names taken together have meaning.  The knowledge that “God is with us” touches on the realization that people would have when they responded to and followed Jesus and experienced a wholeness they would not have known otherwise. To quote the words of an old hymn by Lydia Baxter “Take the name of Jesus with you” – but do not ever assume you have exhausted its meaning.

Algunas imágenes relacionadas con el Adviento y la Navidad que son fijadas en mi mente a causa de numerosas repeticiones durante los años.  Relatan las historias del nacimiento de Jesús y cómo la historia ha sido parte de mi historia.  Refiero principalmente al número de espectáculos de Navidad en que he participado o a que he ido durante los años como un niño creciendo en la iglesia, como adulto, y comp adre y pastor observando tales programas.  He visto a María y a José llegar en Belén, he oído al posadero negándolos espacio, he visto a los tres reyes magos venir de lejos trayendo regalos que me han confundido a veces, he oído de los pastores asustados en la ladera, he visto un pesebre en un establo, y me he imaginado el sentimiento de una cama de paja.  Me he imaginado los vestuarios  – muchos de los cuales de verdad fuero batas llevadas por los niños que participaron.  Me he imaginado en mi mente María como joven cuya piedad es obvia como se arrodilla al pesebre/a la cuna mirando a su hijo recién nacido.  Junto con ella a su lado fue José, quien me imaginé como hombre joven no mucho mayor que María.  También recuerdo viendo a mi nieta representando al bebé Jesús cuando tenía solamente dos semanas.

Claro, ahora me doy cuenta que mucho que ha sido representado en esos espectáculos no es acertado según las historias en los evangelios de Mateo y Lucas.  No hay mención de reyes, sino magos cuyo número no se menciona.  Más tarde la tradición les ha dado nombres y números.  Los evangelios no mencionan animales esa noche del nacimiento, pero aparecen en los espectáculos de todos modos.  No hay mención de un posadero.  Es muy improbable que los reyes magos y los pastores llegaron al mismo tiempo y en el mismo lugar.  Tradiciones primitivas más allá de la Biblia sugieren que José era mucho mayor que María, y que el se había casado antes y ya tenía unos hijos.  Aunque no se menciona en las escrituras tengo sospechas que la relación entre José y María pudiera haber sido un compromiso arreglado en que María no tuvo voz.

Lo que trato de guardar en la mente es que mediante los espectáculos he observado y en que he participado, junto con los villancicos que he cantado que reiteraron unas de las mismas cosas – es posible que hayan tenido unas incongruencias, todavía me han sido formativos en mi peregrinación de fe y todavía me son importantes.  He crecido en mi relación con Dios por entrar en las historias y por relatar las historias otra vez.  Han sido lugares de descanso importantes en mi peregrinación, y sin ellos mi fe sería disminuida.

La historia en Mateo 1:18-25 me relata algunas cosas acerca de José que normalmente los espectáculos de la Navidad no mencionan.  José, aunque inicialmente tentado a separarse de la María embarazada, fue receptivo en un sueño a otro mensaje – que el niño era de Dios.  José había de tener un papel en nombrándolo “Jesús” – “porque él salvará a su pueblo de sus pecados.”  Otro nombre es mencionado de la tradición de fe – “y le pondrás por nombre Emanuel” que significa “Dios con nosotros.”  José le dio a Jesús su nombre – y así proclamó ante otros la legitimidad del nacimiento del bebé y del lugar de María en la historia.  Otros les dio el nombre “Emanuel” para testificar a su presencia en sus vidas y en sus peregrinaciones.

Los dos nombre tomados juntos tienen significado.  El saber que “Dios es con nosotros” toca en la comprensión que la gente tendría cuando respondieron y siguieron a Jesús y experimentaron la plenitud que no habrían conocido de otro modo.  Para citar las palabras de un viejo himno por Lydia Baxter “”Toma el nombre de Jesús contigo” – pero jamás asume que Ud. ha agotado su significado.
