Holy Thursday: Maundy Means Commandment

Exodus 12:1-4, (5-10), 11-14; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26; John 13:1-17, 31b-35

 It is Maundy Thursday.  Maundy means commandment.  It is Commandment Thursday.  Jesus commands us to love God and to love others as we love ourselves. This is not to be a commandment that crushes. It is not a command of toil and empty hearts. Jesus commands us to love God and to love others as we love ourselves … and then shows us what it looks like.  Jesus stoops to wash feet.  We are commanded to love as we have been loved by Jesus.

On Maundy Thursday we are reminded that love is about weakness, rather than strength; love is about God’s mercy and grace, rather than any goodness of our own.  On this night, we gather as the enslaved Hebrew people gathered in Egypt to share the lamb and celebrate God passing over them in mercy. On this night, we gather, amazed and humbled, to have the dust of our souls washed by the servant Messiah.  And we pause in our hurried lives to ask:  “What wondrous love is this, O my soul, that caused Christ to lay aside his life for our souls?” (UMH 292).

We gather on this night to pass on to friends and strangers the words received from Jesus where bread and wine were shared.  We gather on this night to pass on to friends and strangers the name of the One who came to the poor and vulnerable, who taught by story and example, and who fed his disciples and the crowd on hillside and seashore.  We gather on this night in the midst of crisis in Ukraine, in the midst of racial, climate and economic injustices, in the midst of denominational disharmony, and Christ invites us to share a table feast—harmoniously, with our enemies and our friends, with the oppressed and the oppressor, with the traitor and the betrayed.

Interestingly, Jesus’ last meal with his disciples was a Seder--a ritual feast that marks the beginning of Passover and involves retelling the liberation story of Israelites enslaved in ancient Egypt. It is based on the Biblical verse commanding them to retell the story of the Exodus from Egypt: "You shall tell your child on that day, saying, 'It is because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt" (Exodus 13:8).  The LORD delivered a liberating love and the love Jesus commands is a liberating love.  It is probably no accident that Jesus proclaims that the Spirit of the Lord has anointed him “to proclaim release to the captives, … to let the oppressed go free” (Luke 4:18).  A liberating love embraces justice and refuses to be captivated by fear nor imprisoned by hate.  We gather on Maundy Thursday so that we might once again be reminded we are anointed through our baptism to offer liberating love to those facing crisis in Ukraine (and other places in the world).  We gather on Maundy Thursday so that we might once again be reminded we are anointed through our baptism to bear justice with those who still find themselves at the margins of society, without voice, and systematically kept that way. And Jesus shows us what that love looks like.

In stooping to wash feet, Jesus demonstrates a love that originates from humble service.  It is service among equals, where no one—not even Teacher and Lord—stands out.  It is a service of hospitality.  Jesus commands us “to wash one another’s feet, … do as I have done to you” (John 13:14-15).  This is Jesus’ call to discipleship.  We serve as we have been served by Jesus.  Jesus shows us what a servant’s heart looks like.

Much too often I am disappointed by those who treat people as ‘less than’, by those who do not acknowledge the dignity of every human being as a child of God, by those who place ‘hoops to be jumped through’ in order for others to be considered lovable or worthy.  Much too often we donate our leftovers—we donate canned goods that wouldn’t grace our own pantries, we donate clothing that is worn and torn and not worthy of our own closets, and we donate the change in our pockets rather than emptying our wallets or pocketbooks.  Much too often we spend more money on lattes than we offer to ministry.  Much too often we spend more time watching Netflix than we offer to helping others.  Much too often we are unwilling to offer our talent to serving without some kind of recognition. 

I believe that in Christ we are fed so that we might feed others.  I believe in Christ our voices are liberated so that they might be used to liberate others.  And further, I believe in Christ we stoop low, so that others might be lifted up.

In the movie “Star Wars:  Return of the Jedi” Princess Leia says to Hans Solo, “I love you.”  And he answers, “I know.”  Friends, I believe our words and our actions say to the least, the last and the lost—and to God: “I love you.”  And the One who commands us to love, and those who strain to be heard, who hunger for justice, and who yearn to be lifted from the margins, say “I know.”  That is what love looks like.

Heavenly One, encourage us to share, until all are fed; to stoop, ‘til all can stand in pride; and to love, ‘til all are liberated (based on words of Peter W. Millar).

Jueves Santo es el jueves cuando Jesús les dio a sus discípulos su último mandamiento.  Es decir jueves santo es el jueves del mandamiento.  Jesús manda que nosotros amemos a Dios y que nos amemos unos a otros como nos amemos a nosotros mismos.  Éste no debe ser un mandamiento que nos aprieta.  No es mandamiento de trabajo duro y corazones vacíos.  Jesús manda que nosotros amemos a Dios y que nos amemos unos a otros como nos amemos a nosotros mismos . . . y entonces nos muestra cómo es eso.  Jesús se encorva para lavar los pies.  Y nosotros tenemos el mandamiento de amar como hemos sido amados por Jesús.

El Jueves Santo recibimos el recordatorio que el amor trata con la debilidad en vez de la fuerza; el amor trata con la misericordia y la gracia de Dios en vez de la bondad de nosotros.  Esta noche, nos juntamos como el pueblo esclavizado hebreo se juntó en Egipto para compartir el cordero y celebrar Dios pasando por ellos en misericordia en la Pascua de Jehová.  Estas noche nos juntamos, asombrados y humillados, para que el polvo de nuestras almas pueda ser lavada por el Mesías que es sirviente.  Y pausamos en nuestras vidas apresuradas para preguntar: “¿Qué amor es éste, mi alma, que causó que Cristo diera su vida por nuestras almas?” (Himnario Metodista Unido 292).

Nos juntamos esta noche para entregarles a amigos y a extranjeros las palabras que recibimos de Jesús donde el pan y el vino fueron compartidos.  Nos juntamos esta noche para entregarles a amigos y a extranjeros el nombre de Él que vino a los pobres y a los vulnerables, quien enseñó mediante historia y ejemplo, y quien dio de comer a sus discípulos y a la multitud en la ladera y en la orilla.  Nos juntamos esta noche en el medio de la crisis en Ucrania, en disonancia, y Cristo nos invita a compartir un banquete en la mesa – armoniosamente, con nuestros enemigos y nuestros amigos, con los oprimidos y los opresores, con el traidor y el traicionado. 

Es interesante que la última comida que Jesús tuvo con sus discípulos fue una comida de Seder – un banquete ritual que marca el comienzo de la Pascua e incluye el contar de nuevo la historia de la liberación de los israelitas esclavizados en el Egipto antiguo.  Se basa en el versículo bíblico que manda que cuenten de nuevo la historia del Éxodo de Egipto: “En aquel día lo explicarás a tu hijo diciendo: ‘Se hace esto con motivo de lo que Jehová hizo conmigo cuando me sacó de Egipto.’” (Éxodo 13:8).  Jehová entregó un amor de liberación y el amor que Jesús manda es un amor de liberación.  Probablemente no es accidente que Jesús proclama que el Espíritu lo ha ungido para “para dar buenas nuevas a los pobres . . . a pregonar libertad a los cautivos” (Lucas 4:18).  Una amor de liberación abraza la justicia y niega ser cautivado por temor ni encarcelado por odio.  Nos juntamos el Jueves Santos para que podamos ser acordados una vez más que somos ungidos mediante nuestro bautismo para ofrecer amor de liberación a los que se enfrentan crisis en Ucrania (y en otros lugares en el mundo).  Nos juntamos el Jueves Santo para que seamos acordados una vez más que somos ungidos mediante nuestro bautismo para traer justicia con los que todavía se encuentran a los márgenes de la sociedad, sin voz, y sistemáticamente son excluidos.  Y Jesús nos muestra como aparece tal amor.

En acorvarse para lavar los pies, Jesús demuestra un amor que se origina de servicio humilde.  Es servicio entre personas de status igual, donde nadie – ni aún el Maestro y Señor – se destalla.  Es un servicio de hospitalidad.  Jesús manda que lavemos los pies los unos a los otros, según el ejemplo que Jesús nos ha dado (Juan 13:14-15).  Éste es el llamamiento de Jesús al discipulado.  Servimos como hemos sido servidos por Jesús.  Jesús nos muestra qué es el corazón de un siervo.

Demasiado frecuentemente estoy desilusionada por los que tratan a personas como “menos que” por los que no reconocen la dignidad de cada ser humanos como hijo/a de Dios, por los que ponen “barreras por las cuales hay que pasar” para ser considerados dignos – dignos de ser amados.  Demasiado frecuentemente donamos nuestras sobras – donamos productos enlatados que jamás pondríamos en nuestras casas, donamos ropa que ya es gastada y rasgada y no es digna de nuestras casas, y donamos las monedas en nuestros bolsillos en vez de vaciar nuestras carteras o bolsos.  Demasiado frecuentemente gastamos más dinero en café con leche que ofrecemos al ministerio.  Demasiado frecuentemente pasamos más tiempo mirando Netflix que ofrecemos en ayudar a otros.  Demasiado frecuentemente estamos poco dispuestos a ofrecer nuestros talentos en servir sin ninguna clase de reconocimiento.

Creo que en Cristo recibimos comida para que podamos dar de comer a otros.  Creo que en Cristo nuestras voces son liberadas para que puedan ser usadas para liberar a otros.  Y también, creo que en Cristo nos acorvamos bajamente para que otros sean levantados.

En la película: “El Regreso del Jedi de Star Wars” la Princesa Leia le dice a Han Solo, “Te amo.”  Y él responde, “Ya lo sé.”  Hermanos y hermanas, creo que nuestras palabras y nuestras acciones a los más pequeños, a los últimos, y a los perdidos – y a Dios: “Te amo.”  Y Él que manda que amemos, y los que se esfuerzan para ser escuchados, los que desean justicia, y los anhelan ser levantados de los márgenes, dicen “Ya lo sé.”  Esto es amor.

Dios Celestial, anímanos que compartamos hasta que todos tengan comida, hasta que todos puedan levantarse en orgullo, hasta que todos sean libertados (basado en las palabras de Peter W. Millar).
