Temptation of Christ

Feb. 26, 2023 – First Sunday in Lent – Matthew 4:1-11
The temptations at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, historically remind us of the pilgrimage of the people of Israel through the wilderness on their journey to the Promised Land. And, before beginning his ministry, he undertook his own journey of faith for forty days and forty nights giving living testimony and teaching us how to conquer temptations in times of testing or preparation for all believers nowadays.
This biblical text makes me recall individual from the Bible who were tempted and had major consequences for not conquering the temptations and I would like to mention some examples: Cain killed his brother Abel – he was not able to conquer the temptation; David was unable to conquer the temptation to sin with Bathsheba; Judas Iscariot gave up Jesus for 30 pieces of silver and was not able to conquer the temptation regarding money, etc. The only one that was able to conquer the temptations is our “Lord Jesus Christ.” Nowadays all of humanity is being tempted by Satan. The tempter uses the expression, “If you are the Son of God” (vv. 3 and 6), and continues saying if you really are a son or daughter of God, getting divorced from your spouse isn’t worth the trouble, if you want to be recognized by the world you can do a mass killing like the shootings that we have seen in schools, in stores, in wars, and in different countries which don’t stop. Divided families, a divided church – in short we are faced with many temptations that we have not been able to conquer as Jesus did.
How to conquer temptations? Matthew 4. Jesus teaches us that we can only conquer them by means of the Word of God, submitting in obedience to God and in a total dedication with all of our heart, mind, soul as is defined in the greatest commandment given by Jesus. These temptation describe three realities with which Jesus had to deal: Stones turned to bread (vv. 3-4). Stones are abundant in the desert – bread is not. Jesus is challenged to use his power to deal with his hunger. The pinnacle of the temple (vv. 5-7): This is the high place from which all the city is visible – and Jesus himself can be seen. The tempter take Jesus from the desert to Jerusalem (it says in v. 5: “Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple). Jesus es invited to demonstrate that God is at his side and God will protect him and will free him from all danger and harm. The temptation challenges him to reveal God as one who is capable of serving as protector (therefore in v. 6 it says: “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.”).
The Kingdoms of the world (vv. 8-10): In this temptation the movement is toward desire and ambition for power that inhabits every human being (it says in vv. 8-9: “the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor; and he said to him, ‘All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me’”). The tempter is testing the humanity of Jesus and his capacity of being fully human. The first two temptations imply a biblical debate between the tempter and Jesus; the third presents the tempter bringing a concrete offering and Jesus rejecting the power and the riches of the world with the Word of God. According to v. 10, Jesus says: “‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.’”
In conclusion, our Lord Jesus Christ continues teaching us how to conquer temptations that present themselves in our life. We have been baptized as believing sons and daughters of God. We also will have to traverse the wilderness of this life full of temptations and tests that are a challenge for our faith and our walk with God. But by means of the Word of God will be victors in Christ Jesus. Even if the tempter visits, God will place in our path brothers and sisters, angels that will provide both physical and spiritual food for us that we need to live in obedience to God and not to fall to the temptations of Satan. Because only in God is the road that leads to life eternal for which the Son of God gave his life for our salvation. Amen.

Como Vencer las Tentaciones
Memorándum para los que predican
First Sunday in Lent Matt 4:1-11
Las tentaciones al comienzo del ministerio de Jesús, históricamente nos recuerdan el peregrinaje del pueblo de Israel por el desierto en su viaje a la tierra prometida; y antes de comenzar su ministerio emprendió su viaje de fe por cuarenta días y cuarenta noches dando un testimonio vivo y enseñándonos a cómo vencer las tentaciones, en tiempo de prueba o preparación para todo creyente hoy en dia.
Este texto bíblico me hace recordar personajes de la biblias que fueron tentados y tuvieron fuertes consecuencias por no vencer las tentaciones y me gustaría mencionar algunos ejemplos: Caín mató a su hermano Abel abel no pudo vencer la tentación, David no pudo vencer la tentación de pecar con Betzabeth, Judas Iscariotes entrego a Jesus por treinta monedas de plata y no pudo vencer la tentación referente al dinero etc. El único que pudo vencer las tentaciones es nuestro “Señor Jesucristo”. Hoy en día la humanidad entera está siendo tentada por satanás, el tentador usa la expresión “si eres Hijo de Dios” (vv. 3 y 6) sigue diciendo si de verdad eres un hijo o hija de Dios, divorciate tu matrimonio no vale la pena, quieres ser reconocido por el mundo puedes hacer una matanzas como los tiroteos que hemos visto en las escuelas, en las tiendas, las guerras en diferentes países que no paran , las familias divididas, la iglesia dividida, en fin estamos frente a muchas tentaciones que no hemos podido vencer como lo hizo Jesús.
Cómo vencer las tentaciones? Mateo 4. Jesus nos enseña que solo las podemos vencer por medio de la palabra de Dios, sometiéndose, en obediencia a Dios y en una entrega total con todo nuestro corazón, mente, alma, como lo define el mandamiento más grande dado por Jesus. Estas tentaciones describen tres realidades con las cuales Jesús pudo confrontar: Piedras en pan (vv. 3-4): Las piedras abundan en el desierto; el pan no. Jesús es desafiado a usar su poder para resolver su hambre. El pináculo del templo (vv. 5-7): Este es el lugar alto desde donde toda la ciudad es visible y Jesús mismo puede ser visto. El tentador lleva a Jesús desde el desierto hasta Jerusalén (dice el v.5: “el diablo lo llevó a la santa ciudad, lo puso sobre el pináculo del Templo”). Jesús es invitado a demostrar que Dios está de su lado y que lo protegerá y librará de todo peligro y daño. La tentación lo desafía a revelar a un Dios capaz de servirlo como protector (por eso el v.6 dice: “Si eres Hijo de Dios, tírate abajo, pues escrito está: ‘A sus ángeles mandará cerca de ti,’ y ‘En sus manos te sostendrán, para que no tropieces con tu pie en piedra.’”).
Los reinos del mundo (vv. 8-10): en esta tentación se mueve hacia el deseo y la ambición de poder que habita en todo ser humano (dicen los vv. 8-9: “Le mostró todos los reinos del mundo y la gloria de ellos, y le dijo: ‘Todo esto te daré, si postrado me adoras.’”). El tentador está probando la humanidad de Jesús y su capacidad de ser plenamente humano. Las dos primeras tentaciones implican un debate bíblico entre el tentador y Jesús; la tercera presenta al tentador trayendo una oferta concreta de poder y a Jesús rechazando el poder y la riqueza del mundo con la Palabra de Dios. Según el v.10, Jesús dice: “Al Señor tu Dios adorarás y sólo a él servirás”,
En conclusión Nuestro Señor Jesucristo sigue enseñándonos cómo vencer las tentaciones que se nos presentan en nuestra vida, hemos sido bautizados como creyentes hijos e hijas de Dios, también tendremos que atravesar el desierto de esta vida llenos de tentaciones y pruebas que son un desafío para nuestra fe y nuestra caminar con Dios. Pero por medio de la Palabra de Dios seremos vencedores en Cristo Jesus, aunque el tentador nos visite Dios pondrá en nuestro camino a hermanos y hermanas, ángeles que nos proveerán de alimento físico y espiritual que necesitamos para vivir en obediencia a Dios y no caer en las tentaciones de satanás, porque solamente en Dios está el camino que nos lleva a la vida eterna por la cual el Hijo de Dios entregó su vida para nuestra salvación, Amén.
