Nov. 3, 2024, 24th Sunday after Pentecost, All Saints Sunday
Ruth 1:1-18, Ps 146, Heb,9:11-14, Mark 12:28-34
The preacher has two sets of lectionary choices this week. Some churches honor those who have died in the last twelve months on this date, so the All Saints texts may be fitting. It is also the last Sunday before the U.S. November election, and in some settings emotions and anxiety may be higher than usual in that regard. From either perspective, I think a strong sermon about love fills the bill, so I’d choose Mark 12:28-34, where a scribe asks Jesus, “Which commandment is the first of all?”
The scene is the Temple in Jerusalem. The time is after Jesus’ Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem. The context is a setting in which Jesus receives mostly hostile questions from the Sadducees and Pharisees. Then along comes this scribe, a teacher of law – also in a group that typically was suspicious of Jesus. But he appears to ask a legitimate question, “Which commandment is the first of all?”
In my mind’s eye, suddenly Jesus relaxes and smiles. He can see, after all the earlier taunts, that this man’s question is sincere. In all the times the Gospel writers mention the scribes, only this man is seen in a positive light. That made me wonder – can we learn something from this scribe about our own discipleship? Can we be like him – sincere in our own questioning – or are we more like the others taunting those we’re suspicious of when it comes to questions of faith or other critical matters of the day (like politics)?
Seeing the scribe’s sincerity, Jesus answers quoting not one law, but two: First, Deuteronomy 6:5: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” And then from Leviticus 19:18: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus then says, “There is no commandment greater than these.” We may be tempted to say, “OK, I get it. I’m familiar with this. I know I’m supposed to love God and love my neighbor.” But can we do it, even in an election year in our country?
Part of the shock of this story was that this Jerusalem scribe agreed with Jesus. Throughout Mark’s Gospel, the scribes were always evaluating Jesus’ activity. They “fact checked” him scripturally because he forgave someone’s sins (Mark 2:7), they evaluated his dining companions (2:16), they questioned his disciple’s handwashing practices (7:15), along with the priests and elders, they probed into the origins of Jesus’ authority (11:27-30), and along with the Jerusalem priests, they wanted to kill Jesus because they were afraid of his popularity (14:1). But this week’s Gospel passage is a story about an agreement between Jesus and a scribe, a group member of Jesus’ leading archenemies.
In our retirement years, my husband and I bought a home in a Des Moines suburb. We have nice neighbors, even though in election season they typically have different political yard signs up than we do. But that doesn’t keep us from having friendly conversations over the back fence, or getting invited to their kid’s graduation open houses, or keeping an eye on their home when workers are there, or coming to the other’s aid when a snow blower won’t start in the depths of winter.
If your congregation is remembering some “saints” this Sunday, I hope you’re looking at ways these persons showed the unconditional love of God to those around them. If you’re trying to help your congregation navigate an acrimonious political season, my prayer is that you might challenge them to strive to reflect those “better angels” – saints who can rise above our human divisive tendencies in order reflect the love of God.
Regardless of which candidates win the election on Nov. 5, I’ll still have the same neighbors. The primary component of Biblical love is not affection or affinity. To love the neighbor is to imitate God by taking their needs seriously. This isn’t easy, but as Jesus and this unnamed scribe agree, it’s the most important commandment. So, how’s your love life?

Ya sé esto. Ya se que he de amar a Dios y amar a mi prójimo.” Pero, ¿podemos hacerlo, aún en año de elecciones en nuestro país?
Parte del shock de esta historia fue que este escriba de Jerusalén se acordó con Jesús.
