Acts 16:16-34, John 17:20-26
In the gospels of Matthew (26:36-46), Mark (14:32-42), and Luke (22:39-46), Jesus prays before his arrest, prays in the Garden of Gethsemane, and prays alone. Even Jesus’ most trusted disciples are some distance away—not listening, praying, or keeping watch; rather they are asleep. Here, in this week’s gospel lesson from John (17:20-26), the scene is different. The disciples overhear a prayer on their behalf. The conclusion to Jesus’ last Johannine discourse is often referred to as the ‘Priestly Prayer of Jesus.’ In this pericope, Jesus intercedes with God on behalf of the disciples as he prays for those who would come to believe in him through their word, their testimony. And Jesus goes to the cross in the assurance that ordinary people in union with the Triune God will turn the world upside down.
And we need look no further than this week’s scripture lesson from the Acts of the Apostles (16:16-34) to hear of Paul and Silas doing just that. When the Apostle Paul’s annoyance leads to him ordering the spirit to come out of an enslaved girl, her owners drag Paul and Silas before the magistrates: accusing them of causing a disturbance, of advocating unlawful costumes—i.e. they are Jews not observing the customs of the Roman empire, the ruling power, and saying they are upsetting the rule of law and right ordering of society. And with the crowd joining in the attack, Paul and Silas are stripped of their clothing, they are beaten with rods and secured in jail.
Though Paul and Silas find themselves physically imprisoned, they freely testify to God—they pray and sing hymns. As the enslaved girl had pointed out earlier, they are enslaved by the most high God to proclaim a way of salvation. Paul and Silas testify and the others imprisoned with them listen. Now the story might have ended right there with the doors of the prison open and the chains of them all being unfastened. Yet the most high God in union with these disciples is not quite finished. There is a jailer … and there is the household of the jailer. And after breaking bread together, the jailer and his entire household receive the gift of baptism. They come to believe through the word, through the testimony, of Paul and Silas—just as Jesus prayed. Yes, the world is being turned upside down.
Yet what about the world of that enslaved girl--the girl enslaved by her owners to make them a great deal of money telling fortunes? Scripture gives no closure to her story. I don’t know about you, but I’d like to know just why Paul is ‘annoyed’? Yes, perhaps being followed around by someone crying out might become annoying, yet, is she (her spirit) crying falsehoods? Is it distracting from Paul’s mission? Lets admit some find themselves at odds with the way Christian faith is expressed by others. And what of the girl’s enslavers, does the liberation of the spirit of divination make her less valuable to them? Yet even with these unanswered questions, I hold onto the belief that grace is extended to her just as it is extended toward the jailer. I want to believe that Paul’s actions, in the name of Jesus, bring her liberation.
Yes, Scripture does not always provide all the information we readers desire. Yet that void opens a space in which we can put what we believe about liberating our God into the story.
Yes, Scripture does not always paint a pretty picture. Yet, we must not turn away too quickly from people whose perspective, or ways of proclaiming it, is uncomfortable for us.
The story of this enslaved girl can serve to remind us of the inequities and systemic injustices that still exist in society. I believe it is good, and right, for us to pause and stay with the story of the enslaved girl, to not move too quickly from her story to the jail scene with Paul and Silas. Her lack of power should awaken us to the reality of our own situation and how much too often we remain silent when folks say and do the most terrible things. How much too often we take no risks on behalf of those who are overlooked, ignored, or dismissed.
Friends, I believe our God is a liberating God, that Jesus brings good news to those oppressed, and that the Holy Spirit empowers those who dare proclaim a way to freedom. Living that truth is what will turn the world upside down. This is Jesus’ prayer for his disciples; this is Jesus’ prayer* for us:
Divine Parent, you are in me and I am in you; we are one.
You have loved me before the world was founded.
May they come to believe that you have sent me.
May they come to know your name.
May they come to understand the love with which you have loved me
so that the love may be in them and they may all be one.
I in them; and they in us.

En los evangelios de Mateo (26:36-46), Marcos (14:32-42), y Lucas (22:39-46), Jesús ora antes de su arresto, ora en el Jardín de Getsemaní, y ora por sí solo. Aún los discípulos más leales de Jesús quedan a una distancia – y no están escuchando, ni orando, ni vigilando; sino que están dormidos. En la lectura del Evangelio para esta semana de Juan (17:20-26), la escena es diferente. Los discípulos escuchan una oración por ellos mismos. La conclusión del último discurso de Jesús en Juan frecuentemente es nombrado “La Oración Sacerdotal de Jesús.” En esta escena, Jesús intercede con Dios por los discípulos como ora por los que vendrían a creer en Él mediante sus palabras, y su testimonio. Y Jesús va a la cruz en la aseguranza que personas ordinarias en unión con el Dios trino pondrán el mundo patas arriba.
Y no necesitamos mirar más allá que la lectura de Hechos (16:16-34) para esta semana para oír que Pablo y Silas están haciendo exactamente eso. Cuando la irritación del Apóstol Pablo le causa ordenar que el espíritu salga de una muchacha esclavizada, sus amos prenden a Pablo y a Silas ante las autoridades acusándolos de causar un disturbio, de abogar por costumbres ilegales – es decir son judíos que observan las costumbres del Imperio Romano, el poder que gobierna, y dicen que derrotan la ley y la orden correcta de la sociedad. Y con la multitud se juntan en el ataque, Pablo y Silas son privados de su ropa, son golpeados con varas y son puestos en la cárcel.
Aunque Pablo y Silas se encuentran encarcelados físicamente, testifican libremente acerca de Dios – oran y cantan himnos. Como la muchacha esclavizada había señalado antes, son esclavizados por el Dios más Alto para proclamar el camino de la salvación. Pablo y Silas testifican y los otros que están encarcelados con ellos escuchan. Ahora es posible que la historia terminara allá con las puertas de la cárcel abiertas y con las cadenas de todos desabrochadas. Pero el Dios más Alto en unión con estos discípulos no está terminado. Hay un carcelero . . . y hay la gente de la casa del carcelero. Y después de comer algo, el carcelero y todos de su casa reciben el don del bautismo. Pero, ¿qué pasó en el mundo de esa muchacha esclavizada – la muchacha esclavizada por sus amos para que pudieran ganar mucho dinero por adivinar? Las escrituras no clausura a su historia. No sé que piensa Ud., pero me gustaría saber por qué Pablo fue irritado? Sí, es posible que lo fue por ser seguido por alguien gritando, pero ¿está ella (o su espíritu) gritando falsedades? ¿Es algo que distrae a Pablo de su misión? Admitamos que algunos no están de acuerdo con la manera en que la fe cristiana es expresada por otras personas. Y, ¿qué pasa con los amos? ¿Es que la liberación de la muchacha les hace de menos valor? Pero, aún con todas estas preguntas sin respuestas, mantengo la creencia que la gracia es extendida a ella tal como lo es al carcelero. Quiero creer que las acciones de Pablo, en el nombre de Jesús, le trae liberación total.
Sí, las escrituras no nos proveen toda la información que nosotros como lectores deseamos. Pero aquel vacío abre un espacio en el cual podemos poner en la historia lo que creemos acerca de nuestro Dios que libera. Sí, las escrituras no pintan siempre un cuadro bonito. Pero, no debemos volvernos demasiado rápidamente de personas cuya perspectiva, o maneras de proclamarla, nos es incómoda.
La historia de esta muchacha esclavizada puede servir para acordarnos de las inequidades y las injusticias sistémicas que todavía existen en la sociedad. Creo es bueno, y correcto, que pausemos y nos quedemos con la historia de la muchacha esclavizada, y no avanzar demasiado rápidamente de su historia a la escena de la cárcel con Pablo y Silas. Su falta de poder debe despertarnos a la realidad de nuestra propia situación y de cuán frecuentemente nos quedamos mudos cuando personas dicen y hacen cosas terribles. Cuán frecuentemente no nos arriesgamos por los que son ignorados o despedidos.
Amigos, creo que nuestro Dios es un Dios que libera, que Jesús trae buenas noticias a los oprimidos, y que el Espíritu Santo empodera a los que se atreven a proclamar un camino a la libertad. Viviendo esa verdad es lo que pondrá al mundo patas arriba. Esto es la oración de Jesús por sus discípulos; esto es la oración* de Jesús por nosotros:
Madre y Padre Divino, eres en mí y yo en ti; somos uno.
Me has amado antes de que fuera fundado el mundo.
Que lleguen a creer que tú me has mandado.
Que lleguen a conocer tu nombre.
Que lleguen a comprender el amor con el cual tú me has amado
para que el amor pueda ser en ellos y que puedan ser uno.
