Jesus on the Cross
Our focus for Lent shouldn't be on our own suffering, but about what Jesus will face on the cross.

Often we think of the season of Lent as a long road that stretches out before us. The season of Lent is a journey that we take each year. Its purpose is to remind of us of our own human frailties, of our need to repent, and of our need for God’s forgiveness. But there are many pitfalls on this long road. We can make ourselves and our efforts the focus of attention. I remember when I was teaching, I would often have students come into my room before the bell rang. Some would already have the sign of the cross on their foreheads, others would have it imposed later in the day. They would discuss what they were “giving up for Lent.” As teenagers, the big things to give up were caffeine or sugar. Often I would overhear how difficult this was them – and how much they were suffering. All too often, the focus of their Lenten journey was on them and their suffering. The trouble is, as adults, too often we do the same thing.
Lent is not about our small steps along the way. As we journey through Lent, we should not be concentrating on the tiny steps we take – tempting though that might be. Rather we should be focusing on the destination of our journey – the cross of Jesus. So on Ash Wednesday, as we begin our Lenten journey, we lift our eyes to the cross. And we focus on Jesus – not on ourselves.
To begin our Lenten journey, we focus on confession. For so many, confession is difficult and humiliating. But it is absolutely necessary if we are to keep a proper focus. Once we have confessed our sin, then we impose ashes on our foreheads as a sign of repentance. This is not to make us feel bad, and certainly it should not be to make us feel so guilty that we will punish ourselves by giving up something for Lent. Rather, by being reminded of who we are in truth, we are brought back to the reality of God's deep love and mercy for us and for our world. When we have a proper focus, as we walk the road of Lent, we journey toward the love and mercy of God given to us in Jesus Christ.
One simple meaning of the word repentance is “to turn around.” Lent calls us to turn around toward God. Once turned, we walk toward him. God is our focus this season. The focus of Lent is not us and not the opinions of others. Jesus talks about this in the reading from the Gospel. Jesus is warning you, me, and the whole Christian community not to lose our direction and our focus on God. As we progress on our Lenten journey, we are in real danger of losing our true focus. It's too easy to start to concentrate on our own efforts – the good deeds that we do – after all, we like it when it’s all about us. But, when we do this, the opinions and approval of others begin to matter much more than they should. In Matthew's Gospel, Jesus tells us that when we practice giving alms, when we pray, and when we fast, we must not do these things for public approval. This is like my students who wanted the approval of their classmates for what they were giving up during Lent. They were hoping for different types of applause. But, when we live this way, our efforts become all about the approval of others and not about our relationship with God.
Our society likes to work in exactly this way, and we must be careful not to be entrapped by it in our walk of faith. Many charities will publish their lists of “Gold Givers,” “Silver Givers,” and “Bronze Givers.” Usually they have created attractive names for each category, but the idea is the same. My wife and I live in a retirement community that has a “Good Shepherd Fund” which helps out residents who have run out of funds through no fault of their own. I was shocked recently to find that our names were on a plaque as donors from the past year. We had not donated for such recognition, yet that type of recognition does encourage many potential donors. Jesus tells us that, for our own spiritual health, we need to practice our almsgiving, prayer, and fasting in private. We should not seek any honor or earthly reward because of it. God does not have “Gold,” “Silver,” and “Bronze” categories for us. On this Ash Wednesday, as we lift our eyes and our hearts to the cross of Christ, let us pray, give offerings, and fast because they are for our spiritual health – not for approval or recognition coming from others.
This is one reason why I like to have Ash Wednesday services in the evening. Those who have the sign of the cross imposed are not nearly as tempted to show off, but rather are brought face to face with their humanity and their sin. We are all marked by sin and the power of death.
So, in this season of Lent, let us journey with our eyes on Jesus – and not on our own paltry footsteps. Let us seek God’s approval and not the approval of the crowd. God hears and sees us and, as Jesus promises in our Gospel reading, we will be blessed by God. We are all on the road to the cross of Christ. May we keep our eyes on Jesus and his saving death and resurrection. Pray. Help others. Discipline yourselves with faithful practices. But do them all in thanksgiving and to the glory of the God who saves you.

Frecuentemente pensamos en la estación de la Cuaresma como un camino largo que extiende ante nosotros. La estación de la Cuaresma es una peregrinación que hacemos cada año. Su propósito es acordarnos de nuestras debilidades humanas, de nuestra necesidad de arrepentirnos, y de nuestra necesidad del perdón de Dios. Pero, hay muchas dificultades en este camino largo. Podemos hacernos a nosotros y nuestros esfuerzos el foco de atención. Recuerdo cuando enseñaba, frecuentemente tenía estudiantes que venían a la sala antes de sonar la campana. Algunos ya tenían el signo de la cruz en la frente, otros lo tendrían impuesto más tarde ese día. Discutían lo que iban a abandonar para la Cuaresma. Como jóvenes, las cosas más comunes era la cafeína o el azúcar. Y, frecuentemente, oía cuán difícil era para ellos – y cuánto estaban sufriendo. Y, demasiado frecuentemente, el foco de su peregrinación cuaresmal estaba centrado en ellos mismos y en su sufrimiento. Así que en el Miércoles de Cenizas, como comenzamos nuestras peregrinación cuaresmal, levantamos nuestros ojos a la cruz. Y nos enfocamos en Jesús – no en nosotros mismos.
Para comenzar nuestra peregrinación cuaresmal, nos enfocamos en nuestra confesión. Para tantas personas la confesión es difícil y humillante. Pero, es absolutamente necesaria si hemos de mantener nuestro foco apropiado. Una vez que hemos confesado nuestro pecado, entonces imponemos cenizas en la frente como signo de arrepentimiento. Esto no es para que nos sintamos mal, y ciertamente no debe causar que sintamos culpables para que nos castiguemos por abandonar algo para la Cuaresma. En vez de eso, por ser acordado de quiénes somos de verdad, volvemos a la realidad del amor profundo de Dios y su misericordia para nosotros y para todo el mundo. Cuando tenemos un foco apropiado, como andamos en el camino de la Cuaresma, peregrinamos hacia el amor y la misericordia de Dios dados a nosotros en Jesucristo.
Un significado simple de la palabra arrepentimiento es “darse la vuelta.” La Cuaresma nos llama a darse la vuelta y mover hacia Dios. Una vez que nos hemos dado la vuelta, andamos hacia Él. Dios es nuestro foco esta estación. El foco de la Cuaresma no es nosotros mismos y no la opinión de otros. Jesús habla de esto en la lectura del Evangelio. Jesús advierte a Ud., a mí, y a toda la comunidad cristiana que no perdamos nuestra dirección y nuestro foco en Dios. Como progresamos en nuestra peregrinación cuaresmal, arriesgamos el peligro verdadero de perder nuestro verdadero foco. Es demasiado fácil comenzar a concentrar en nuestros propios esfuerzos – las buenas acciones que hacemos – pues, nos gusta cuando todo trata de nosotros. Pero, cuando hacemos esto, las opiniones y la aprobación de otros comienzan a contar mucho más que deben. En el Evangelio de Mateo, Jesús nos dice que cuando demos limosna, cuando oremos, y cuando ayunemos, no hemos de hacer estas cosas para la aprobación pública. Esto es como mis estudiantes quienes querían la aprobación de sus compañeros de clase por lo que abandonaban durante la Cuaresma. Esperaban clases diferentes de aplauso. Pero, cuando vivimos así, nuestros esfuerzos son totalmente para la aprobación de otros y no para nuestra relación con Dios.
A nuestra sociedad le gusta funcionar exactamente así, y tenemos que tener mucho cuidado para no ser atrapados por eso en nuestra peregrinación. Muchas caridades publican sus listas de donantes según la clase de “Oro,” de “Plata,” y de “Bronce.” De ordinario han creado nombres atractivos para cada categoría, pero la idea es la misma. Mi esposa y yo vivimos en una comunidad de jubilación que tiene un “Fondo del Buen Pastor” que ayuda a residentes que han agotado sus recursos financieros sin culpa suya. Estaba sorprendido recientemente encontrar que nuestros nombres estaban en una placa como de donantes del año pasado. No habíamos donado por tal reconocimiento, pero esa clase de reconocimiento sí anima a muchos donantes potenciales. Jesús nos dice que, por nuestra propia salud espiritual, necesitamos dar limosna, orar, y ayunar en privado. No debemos buscar ningún honor ni recompensa terrenal a causa de la donación. Dios no tiene categorías de “Oro,” de “Plata”, ni de “Bronce” para nosotros. En este Miércoles de Cenizas, como levantamos nuestros ojos y nuestros corazones a la cruz de Cristo, que oremos, que demos nuestras ofrendas, y que ayunemos porque son para nuestra salud espiritual – no por la aprobación o reconocimiento de otros.
