Happy Pentecost to you! Acts 2:1-21 describes this amazing moment in the birth of the church.
In the previous seven weeks, Jesus has been crucified, buried, risen, and ascended. The revelation of Jesus Christ has led his followers through a roller-coaster of emotions. Listening to him, they felt great hope. Jesus understood and loved them. His Crucifixion was horrifying. Then came the awe of Resurrection, incomprehensible and glorious. Before his ascension, he told them to wait for “the promise of the Father,” (Acts 1:4). “You will be baptized with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 1:5). Mysterious. Now he has ascended. He is gone and they are alone.
For those first disciples, everything was uncertain. What would happen now? They were caught between wonder and doubt, the world pressing in around them. It was an unpredictable place with deeply entrenched patterns. Powerful people ruled. The poor suffered. Evil was always ready to pounce. These old patterns were familiar, and yet Jesus said God’s promise, a new way of life, was on the way.
The disciples were all together in one place, huddled and hunkered down. There may have been just the 12 or maybe more than 120 including women and unnamed followers.
The Holy Spirit arrived roaring like a violent wind. Divided tongues “as of fire” rested above their heads (Acts 2:3). We human beings can be passive, watching, waiting, talking. This was not passive. This was active. Something BIG and everlasting zinged through their souls and united them in the beginning of the church.
This same Holy Spirit has ignited every church since that first Pentecost, including the one you are sitting in now.
Pentecost happened during a Jewish festival. There were people in Jerusalem from all over the world, Cappadocia, Mesopotamia, Pamphylia, Cyrene, Dubuque, Mason City, Jesup. (Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. I believe the Holy Spirit is STILL breathing life into our churches.)
The Holy Spirit made such a racket that people outside heard the noise and gathered.
These travelers from different places spoke different languages. But by the welcoming, inclusive grace of the Holy Spirit, everyone heard of the power of God in their own languages.
My neighbor and I are both lifelong English speakers and we don’t always understand each other. On Pentecost, the people understood each other in their “native” languages, the language their mother had sung to them at their birth, the language of their sisters and brothers, the language of family. This is a miracle only God could dream up and only the Holy Spirit could carry out. This was the first step in becoming the community of the church: listening, hearing and understanding.
There were skeptics. “Oh, they’re all drunk.”
But it was only 9 am, too early for drinking. Peter reminded them of the words of the prophet Joel. God would pour out God’s spirit. Sons and daughters would prophesy. The young would see visions. The old would dream dreams. A new future was ahead and everyone who called on God would be part of it.
Wow.
Today in many of our churches, we wait like those early disciples, huddled and hunkered down. It may feel like Christ has ascended for us too, leaving us in a time of uncertainty. We want the church to look like the one we remember full of children, families and vitality. We long for the church the way it used to be, trusting more in the past than in a Holy Spirit-ignited future.
We face hard questions. Do we still welcome the Holy Spirit? Have we swatted away tongues of fire that might offer new energy for being church? Those early disciples gathered with open windows. Have we closed our windows, locked them down tight and failed to connect with the world outside? Can we speak the language of our neighbors?
I once served a small church. Early on, a church leader told me “We don’t have much hope.” Based on the money in the bank, the church would close in a few months. Churches do close sometimes. That is a reality, but the Holy Spirit never ceases. At that little church we welcomed Pentecost by spray-painting a message on the gravel parking lot. “Holy Spirit, Come Here.” I can’t explain it, but that little church did some amazing ministry. 17 years later it is still open.
This Sunday, celebrate boldly. Tell the stories of your church. Who started it? When? Why? What miracles have you witnessed? How has it changed lives? How might your church carry out the ministry of Christ in your community? Be forewarned: the Holy Spirit is unpredictable, capricious, and zingingly fun. Dream dreams. See visions. And thank God.

¡Feliz Pentecostés a todos Uds.! Hechos 2:1-21 describe este momento increíble en el nacimiento de la iglesia.
En los siete semanas previas, Jesús ha sido crucificado, enterrado, resucitado, y ascendido. La revelación de Jesucristo ha guiado a los seguidores por emociones como en una montaña rusa. Escuchándolo, sintieron gran esperanza. Jesús los comprendía y los amaba. Su crucifixión fue horrorosa. Entonces vino el asombro de la resurrección, incomprensible y glorioso. Antes de su ascensión, les dijo que esperaran “la promesa del Padre,” (Hechos 1:4). “Seréis bautizados con el Espíritu Santo” (Hechos 1:5). Misterioso. Ahora ha ascendido. Ya se ha ido y están solos.
Para estos primeros discípulos, todo era incierto. ¿Qué ocurriría ahora? Estaban atrapados entre asombro y duda, el mundo presionando alrededor de ellos. Era un lugar impredecible con patrones profundamente arraigados. Personas poderosas gobernaban. Los pobres sufrían. La maldad siempre estaba a punto de lanzarse. Estos patrones viejos eran conocidos, y todavía Jesús dijo que la promesa de Dios, una nueva manera de vida, estaba al punto de llegar.

Nosotros como seres humanos podemos ser bien pasivos, mirando, esperando, hablando. Esto no fue pasivo. Esto fue activo. Algo GRANDE y eterno pasó energéticamente por sus almas y los unió en el comienzo de la iglesia.
Este mismo Espíritu Santo encendió a cada iglesia desde ese primer Pentecostés, incluyendo la en que Ud. está sentado/a ahora.
Pentecostés ocurrió durante un festival judío. Había personas en Jerusalén de todas partes del mundo, Capadocia, Mesopotamia, Panfilia, Cirene, Dubuque, Mason City, Jesup. (Lo siento no podía evitarlo. Creo que el Espíritu Santo TODAVÍA respira vida en nuestras iglesias.)
El Espíritu Santo hizo tanto ruido que la gente afuera oyó el ruido y se juntó. Estos viajeros de varios lugar hablaron idiomas diferentes. Pero por la gracia acogedora del Espíritu Santo, todos oyeron del poder de Dios en sus propios idiomas.
Mi vecino y yo ambos somos hablantes de inglés por todas nuestras vidas y no nos comprendemos siempre. En Pentecostés, la gente se comprendió en sus idiomas “nativos,” el idioma que sus madre les había cantado en su nacimiento, el idioma de sus hermanas y hermanos, el idioma de su familia. Éste es un milagro que solamente Dios podría soñar y solamente el Espíritu Santo podría realizar. Éste fue el primero paso en hacerse la comunidad de la iglesia: escuchando, oyendo y comprendiendo.
Había escépticos. “Están borrachos.”
Pero solamente eran las 9 de la mañana, demasiado temprano para beber. Pedro los acordó de las palabras del profeta Joel. Dios derramaría el Espíritu de Dios. Hijos e hijas profetizarían. Jóvenes verían visiones. Ancianos soñarían sueños. Un nuevo futuro estaba delante de ellos y todos que llamarían en Dios serían parte de ello.
Guau.
Hoy en muchas de nuestras iglesias, esperamos como esos primeros discípulos, acurrucados y agachados. Es posible que sienta como Cristo ha ascendido para nosotros también, dejándonos en un tiempo de incertidumbre. Queremos que la iglesia sea como la que recordamos llena de niños, familias y vitalidad. Anhelamos a la iglesia como era, confiando más en el pasado que en un futuro encendido por el Espíritu Santo.
Nos confrontamos con preguntas difíciles. ¿Todavía damos la bienvenida al Espíritu Santo? ¿Es que hemos bateado las lenguas de fuego que puedan ofrecer nueva energía para ser la iglesia? Estos primeros discípulos se juntaron con ventanas abiertas. ¿Hemos cerrado nuestras ventanas, las hemos cerrado con llave y hemos faltado conectar con el mundo afuera? ¿Podemos hablar el idioma de nuestros vecinos?
Una vez serví a una iglesia pequeña. Muy temprano, un líder me dijo “No tenemos mucha esperanza.” Basado en el dinero en el banco, la iglesia cerraría en pocos meses. Iglesia sí cierran algunas veces. Esto es una realidad, pero el Espíritu Santo jamás termina. En esa pequeña iglesia dimos la bienvenida a Pentecostés con un mensaje pintado con pintura en aerosol en el estacionamiento de grava, “Espíritu Santo, Ven Acá.” No puedo explicarlo, pero esa pequeña iglesia hizo ministerio asombroso. Y 17 años después todavía está abierta.
Este domingo que celebren audazmente. Relaten las historias de su iglesia. ¿Quién(es) la comenzó/ comenzaron? ¿Cuándo? ¿Por qué? ¿Qué milagros han visto? ¿Cómo han cambiado vidas? ¿Cómo podría su iglesia realizar el ministerio de Cristo en su comunidad? Que sean advertidos: El Espíritu Santo es impredecible, caprichoso, y asombrosamente divertido. Que sueñen sueños. Que vean visiones. Y que den gracias a Dios.
