1 Kings 19:1-15a, Ps. 42, Galatians 3:23-29, Luke 8:26-39

All four lectionary texts for this weekend are powerful, but the preacher is advised to proceed with caution.  Depending on the make-up of your congregation, a couple of these texts could have some red flags.

The Gospel text, Luke 8:26-39, tells the fascinating story of Jesus healing the Gerasene demoniac. Perhaps the man has some acute form of mental illness. He does not request to be healed, but Jesus asks his name.  “Legion,” the man responds. Then Jesus heals him by driving out the many demons. – reminding us that Jesus longs to make us whole, no matter how extreme our brokenness may be. But within this story there is also a potential landmine, which can cause some miss the point.  This healing had a negative effect on the local economy.  If some of your listeners are also members of the Pork Producers or hog farmers, they may be distracted and offended by the fact that the demons were driven into a nearby herd of pigs who then rushed off a cliff. Agriculture can sometimes be a fraught topic – controversies abound in areas like use of pesticides, treatment of animals, soil erosion, impact of climate change, etc.  You may wish to address these issues – just don’t stumble unexpectantly into a landmine.  And remember, this week’s Gospel text is a healing story. 

The epistle text also brings some unusual challenges. The words of Paul in Galatians 3:28 are so powerful, “There is neither Jew nor Greek; there is neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”  But in this era, they may sound enough like one of today’s controversial topics – “DEI” – to ring alarm bells for some in your congregation.  In truth, the early church was unique in its diversity, equity, and inclusion, and although we have never modeled those qualities perfectly, Christians around the globe today are still living examples that all persons have sacred worth and are to be treated accordingly.  The text is well worth exploring – and certainly pertinent today. Just proceed with caution. 

To avoid potentially controversial topics entirely, consider focusing on 1 King 19:1-15a, relating to the battle between Jezebel, the pagan queen married to Israel’s King Ahab, and the 9th century Jewish prophet, Elijah. To refresh your memory of that story, read 1 Kings 18.

In 1 Kings 19, Elijah, fearing Jezebel’s wrath, has fled to Horeb, the mountain of God, hiding there in a cave. We should not be surprised that God showed up and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”  (Probably something God asks us a lot, when we’re in those tough spots – or hiding.)  I translate Elijah’s defensive response this way: “Look, I am the only one who cares, and if you were in my situation, you’d run away and hide too.”

What follows is a mighty wind (but God is not in the wind), a violent earthquake (but God is not in the earthquake), and then a fire (but God is not in the fire.)  And after that comes a still small voice – or as the NRSV translation puts it - “a sound of sheer silence.” (vs. 12) The Wesley Study Bible adds this Life Application note: “The very heart of the Bible is about meeting God in uncounted ways with uncounted consequences. So it is wise for us to slow down and encounter this text with the expectation that we, too, may experience God in new and future-giving ways. We, too, may learn anew about the inescapable wonder of God’s prevenient grace that will find us, feed us, and employ us.” [i]

That leads me to conclude with the yearning of the writer of Psalm 42:1-2: “As the deer longs for the water, for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God.  My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.”  I believe that’s why Christians – in all our beautiful, complex, and sometimes challenging diversity – are drawn to worship.   For us as preachers, the task is both to challenge our listener’s faith (why are they hiding in caves of their own making?) and offer them pathways to know the inescapable wonder of God’s prevenient grace.

1 Reyes 19:1-15a; Salmos 42; Gálatas 3:23-29; Lucas 8:26-39

Todas las cuatro lecturas para este fin de semana son poderosas, pero el/la predicador/a es aconsejado/a que proceda con precaución.  Dependiendo de la composición, unas de estos textos podrían tener algunos toques de atención.

El texto del Evangelio, Lucas 8:26-39, relata la historia fascinante de Jesús curando al endemoniado gadareno.  Quizás el hombre tiene alguna forma de enfermedad mental.  No tiene que pedir ser curado, pero Jesús pide su nombre.  “Legión,” responde el hombre.  Entonces Jesús lo cura por expulsar a los mucho demonios – acordándonos que Jesús anhela curarnos a nosotros , no importa cuán malas son nuestras heridas.  Pero dentro de esta historia también hay una mina terrestre potencial, la cual puede causar que algunos pierdan el punto.  Esta curación tuvo efecto negativo en la economía local.  Si algunos de sus escuchadores también son miembros del los Productores de Puerco o son agricultores con cerdos, es posible que sean desconcentrados y ofendidos a causa de que los demonios fueron expulsados a un hato cercano de cerdos que entonces se precipitaron por un despeñadero.  La agricultura algunas veces puede ser tópico tenso – controversias abundan en áreas como el uso de pesticidas, el tratamiento de animales, la erosión de la tierra, el impacto del cambio del clima, etc.  Es posible que Ud. quiera hablar sobre estos asuntos – pero no se tropiece inesperadamente con una mina terrestre.  Y recuerde, la historia del Evangelio para esta semana es una historia de una curación. 

El texto de las espístolas también trae unos desafías poco ordinarios.  Las palabras de Pablo en Gálatas 3:28 son tan poderosas.  “Ya no hay judío ni griego; no hay esclavo ni libre; no hay hombre ni mujer, porque todos vosotros sois uno en Cristo Jesús.”  Pero en esta época, es posible que parezcan como una los tópicos controversiales – DEI [Diversidad, Igualdad, Inclusión] – para timbrar alarmas para algunos en su congregación.  De verdad, la iglesia primitiva era única en su diversidad, igualdad, e inclusión, y aunque jamás hemos modelado estas calidades perfectamente, todavía cristianos en todas partes del mundo hoy son ejemplos vivos que todas personas tienen valor sagrado y han de ser tratados así.  El texto vale la pena explorar – y sin duda son pertinentes hoy.  Simplemente que proceda con precaución.

Para evitar tópicos que son potencialmente controversiales completamente, considere enfocándose en 1 Reyes 19:1-15a, que trata con la batalla entre Jezabel, la reina pagana casada con el Rey de Israel Acab, y el profeta judío del siglo IX, Elías.  Para refrescar su memoria de esa historia lea 1 Reyes 18.  En 1 Reyes 19, Elías, temiendo la ira de Jezabel, ha huido a Horeb, la montaña de Dios, escondiéndose allá en una cueva.  No debemos estar sorprendidos que Dios se presenta y dice, “¿Qué haces aquí, Elías?”  (Probablemente es algo que Dios nos pregunta frecuentemente, cuando nos encontramos en situaciones difíciles – cuando estamos escondiéndonos).  Traduzco la respuesta defensiva de Elías así: “Mira, soy el único que se preocupa, y si tú fueras en mi situación, huirías y te esconderías también.”  Lo que sigue es un viento fuerte (pero Dios no estaba en el viento), un terremoto violente (pero Dios no estaba en el terremoto), y entonces un fuego (pero Dios no estaba en el fuego).  Y tras el fuego se escuchó un silbo apacible y delicado.  La Wesley Study Bible añade esta nota de aplicación a la vida: “El corazón mismo de la Biblia trata con encontrarse con Dios en maneras incontables con consecuencias incontables.  Así que nos es sabio que desaceleremos y que encontremos este texto con la expectación que es posible que nosotros, también podamos experimentar a Dios en maneras nueva que nos dan un futuro.  Es posible que nosotros, también, aprendamos otra vez acerca de la maravilla ineludible de la gracia preveniente de Dios que nos encontrará, que nos alimentará, y que nos empleará . . .”1

Eso me conduce a concluir con el anhelo del escritor de Salmos 42:1-2.  “Como el ciervo brama por las corrientes de las aguas, así clama por ti, Dios, el alma mía.  Mi alma tiene sed de Dios, del Dios vivo.”  Creo que eso es por qué cristianos – en nuestra diversidad hermosa, compleja, y algunas veces desafiante – somos atraídos al culto.  Para nosotros como predicadores, la tarea es ambos para desafiar la fe del escuchador (por qué se esconden en cuevas que ellos mismos han hecho) y ofrecerles un camino para conocer la maravilla inevitable de la gracia preveniente.
