Parable of the Lost Coin

Text: Jeremiah 4:11-12, 22-28; Psalm 14; 1 Timothy 1:12-17; Luke 15:1-10
On graduation day from Simpson College, my family was helping me move out. We packed everything up in my mom’s SUV while I followed behind with my brothers in my car. My parents took off, we helped my friends load up, and I realized I couldn’t find my keys. After looking everywhere, we called my parents and they found them in the top of a box in their vehicle. Believe it or not, that wasn’t the only time I’ve lost my keys while moving. So, I can relate a bit to the panic of the woman and the shepherd who suddenly notice that something precious to them is lost.
In this chapter, Jesus sits down for supper with some unsavory characters – tax collectors and sinners. Which leads me to wonder which people would we find it scandalous for Jesus to be having dinner with? Drag queens? Muslims? White supremacists? Democrats? Republicans? We all have some group of people that might ruffle our feathers a bit. If you saw them with Jesus laughing and chatting and eating, would it make you stop in your tracks and stare? The Pharisees and scribes sure did. They walked by the house and started to grumble and complain.
And so loud enough so they could hear, Jesus begins to tell these stories about things that are lost. About the shepherd who left behind an entire flock to seek out one that was lost. About the woman who burns as much oil as a single coin was worth just to find it. And, if we keep reading, about a father who ran to embrace a son that betrayed him. When they found those lost things – Jesus said – there was great rejoicing. Because God seeks the lost of this world and God rejoices when they are found.
We so often focus on the one that is lost. Or on the one who has done the losing. But I am also reminded of a story told by Rodger Nishioka. He was a Presbyterian working alongside some Russian Orthodox folks on an ecumenical project. One day, he made reference to the “Parable of the Lost Sheep” when someone interrupted him and asked him which parable he meant. For a moment, I imagine Mr. Nishioka thought these Russian Orthodox folks didn’t know their bibles very well. So, he summarized Luke’s parable about the shepherd looking for the one sheep that had gone missing from the flock of 100.
The Russian Orthodox priest looked at him and said, “Oh! You mean the Parable of the incomplete flock.” In their tradition, God was concerned about the one sheep that went missing, because without that one sheep – the 100 would not be complete.
God wants to seek out and find all of God’s children and our family is only complete when all who are lost are found. And that means that we are incomplete without those who are lost. The family of God is incomplete when we leave out the tax collectors and sinners. It is incomplete when we turn our backs on the drag queens and white supremacists. We are not whole until our siblings who are Muslim or Jewish or Buddhist are welcomed. We are lost if we cannot sit down with Jesus and the prostitutes.
Our world is so full of division, animosity, and hatred. We are so quick to share misinformation and to criticize. And I think in many ways, these parables remind us that when we diminish the worth of another person and hold them at a distance… when we believe that others are unworthy, unfaithful, or uninterested… when we act in hatred or anger towards our siblings… when we are unwilling to sit down together and share a meal… well, then our human family is incomplete. And part of our role as disciples of Jesus Christ is to not simply refrain from grumbling about whatever group of folks we might label as other… but to actively do our part to seek them out and celebrate the relationships we might discover.
Like the woman with the lost coin, or the shepherd with the lost sheep, or the father whose son has gone missing, God seeks out every single one of us until we are found. Even me. Even you. Even them.

El Rebaño Incompleto
El día de graduarme de Simpson College, mi familia me ayudaba a mudarme. Pusimos todo en el SUV de mi mamá mientras yo seguía tras ella con mis hermanos en mi carro. Mis padres salieron, ayudamos a mis amigos con sus cosas, y me di cuenta de que no podía encontrar mis llaves. Después de mirar en todas partes, llamamos a mis padres y ellos las encontraron en una caja dentro de su vehículo. Lo creas o no, eso fue la única vez que perdí mi llaves mientras mudarme. Así que, puedo identificarme un poco con el pánico de la mujer y del pastor quienes de repente notan que algo que les es precioso está perdido.
En este capítulo, Jesús se sienta para comer su comida con unas personas desagradables – publicanos y pecadores. Lo cual me causa preguntarme – ¿cuáles son las personas que nosotros creemos con que Jesús no debe comer? ¿Una drag queen? ¿Musulmanes? ¿Defensores de la supremacía de la raza blanca? ¿Demócratas? ¿Republicanos? Todos tenemos algunos grupos de personas que nos levanta ampollas un poco. Si Ud. los viera con Jesús riéndose y charlando y comiendo, ¿le causaría detenerse y mirar fijamente? Ciertamente fue así con los fariseos y los escribas. Pasaron por la casa y comenzaron a gruñir y quejarse.
Y tan fuerte para que pudieran oír, Jesús comienza a relatar estas historias acerca de cosas que están perdidas. Acerca del pastor que dejó atrás todo el rebaño para busca una que estaba perdida. Acerca de la mujer que quema tanto aceite que valía una moneda simplemente para encontrar la moneda. Y, si seguimos leyendo, acerca de un padre que corrió para abrazar a un hijo quien lo traicionó. Cuando encontraron estas cosas perdidas – Jesús dice – hubo gran regocijo. Porque Dios busca a los perdidos en este mundo y Dios se regocija cuando son encontrados.
Tan frecuentemente nos enfocamos en el que está perdido. O en el que ha perdido algo. Pero me acuerdo de una historia relatada por Rodger Nishioka. Era presbiteriano trabajando junto con personas de la iglesia ortodoxa rusa en un proyecto ecuménico. Un día, se refirió a la “Parábola de la Oveja Perdida,” cuando alguien le interrumpió y le preguntó a qué parábola se refirió. Por un momento Sr. Nishioka pensó que la gente de la iglesia ortodoxa rusa no conocía bien sus biblias. Así que resumió la parábola de Lucas acerca del pastor buscando esa oveja que se había perdido del rebaño.
El sacerdote de la Iglesia Ortodoxa Rusa miró a él y dijo, “¡Oh! Ud. habla de la Parábola del Rebaño Incompleto.” En su tradición, Dios estaba preocupado por la oveja que estaba perdida por que sin esa oveja, las 100 no serían completas.
Dios quiere que buscar y encontrar a todos los hijos de Dios y nuestra familia solamente es completa cuando todos de los perdidos son encontrados. Y eso significa que somo incompletos sin los que están perdidos. La familia de Dios es incompleta cuando excluimos a los publicanos y a los pecadores. Es incompleta cuando damos la espalda a las drag queens y a los defensores de la supremacía de la raza blanca. No somos completos hasta que nuestros hermanos y hermanas que son musulmanes o judíos o budistas reciban la bienvenida. Estamos perdidos si no podemos sentarnos con Jesús y las prostitutas.
Nuestro mundo es tan lleno de división, animosidad, y odio. Nos apresuramos a compartir desinformación y a criticar. Y creo que en muchas maneras estas parábola nos acuerdan que cuando disminuimos el valor de otra persona y los mantenemos a distancia . . . cuando creemos que otros son indignos, infieles, o desinteresados . . . cuando actuamos en odio o ira contra nuestros hermanos y hermanas . . . cuando no estamos dispuestos a compartir una comida . . . pues entonces nuestra familia humana es incompleta. Y parte de nuestro papel como discípulos de Jesucristo es no abstenernos simplemente de gruñir y quejarnos de cualquier grupo de personas que nombramos como el “otro” . . . sino activamente hacer nuestra parte para buscarlos y celebrar las relaciones que descubramos.
Como la mujer con la moneda perdida, o el pastor con la oveja perdida, o el padre cuyo hijo estaba perdido, Dios busca a cada uno de nosotros hasta que seamos encontrados. Aún a mí. Aún a ti. Aún a ellos.
