Love one another

Oct. 31, 2021 31st Sunday after Pentecost
Ruth 1:1-18, Psalm 146, Hebrews 9:11-14, Mark 12:28-34
In our gospel text for this date, a legal expert stumbles upon a debate between Jesus and some other religious leaders. They had been arguing about taxes, marriage, death, and resurrection and this interloper was impressed by Jesus’ answers. So, they ask – “Which commandment is the most important of all.”
A scribe or a legal expert would have been very familiar with the laws in the Jewish tradition. They were a guide for how to live as a saved people. The Israelites had been rescued from Pharoah’s grip and in the wilderness, they were formed as God’s chosen ones. While we are familiar with the Ten Commandments, there were a total of 613 different laws in the Torah – many intended to explain in further detail how those commandments should apply to daily life. The laws were intended to help them live in community and prevent the kinds of personal and social evils that could destroy them. With such a large list, surely the scribe had their own personal favorites. When Jesus was asked about which of these were the most important, he referred to only two:
- the Shema from Deuteronomy 6:4-5 – love the Lord with everything you are.
- Leviticus 19:18 – love your neighbor as yourself.
Jesus took not only the ten commandments, but all 613 laws and boiled them down to five words: Love God and your neighbor.
A retired band teacher in my church recently shared with me about rule-making in his classroom. He used to have rules for every possible infraction and behavior a student might employ. But he spent so much time enforcing and debating with students about the rules, that there was hardly any time left for teaching! So he simplified everything down to two: 1) Respect each other and 2) Do your part.
Rather than constantly guarding against what might happen, this teacher created a proactively positive classroom environment focused on our relationships with one another. And that is what Jesus did. These two commands are centered in relationships of love. Love is the standard for how we are to behave. Love defines who we are. Love is the fence that guards us from harmful activity towards ourselves or others.
I’ve always focused on Jesus’ response here and must confess that I have too often ignored the response of the legal expert. He affirms Jesus’ answer and then proclaims that these are “much more important than all kinds of entirely burned offerings and sacrifices.” Which got me thinking about that classroom once again. After all, offerings and sacrifices are only necessary when we break the rules. They are a mechanism to restore us to a right relationship with God and one another. But if we are focused on our positive actions and living in right relationship to begin with, those acts of atonement become wholly unnecessary.
What this legal expert couldn’t yet know is that God’s love for us was also creating a new way to be right with God. As the passage from Hebrews reminds us, Christ offered himself once and for all time so that we might be released from the weight of our transgressions and set free to love and serve God with every fiber of our being. Even when we fail to do what is right, God has already cleansed and forgiven us of our transgressions and pours out the spirit of love into our lives.
All we need to do is focus on love. The love of Christ reminds us that we are all sinners in need of God’s grace. The love of Christ shows us what grace and mercy are all about. The love of Christ sacrificially bends down in service to others. The love of Christ gives life to others. Love is not a feeling, but a verb and a daily decision to be in right relationship with God and with our neighbors.

En nuestra lectura del evangelio para esta mañana, un experto legal se encuentra en un debate entre Jesús y algunos otros líderes religiosos. Habían estado discutiendo impuestos, matrimonio, muerte, y resurrección y este intruso fue impresionado por las respuestas de Jesús. Así que, hacen la pregunta – “¿Cuál es el primer mandamiento de todos?”
Un escriba o experto legal habría sido muy familiar con las leyes en la tradición judía. Eran una guía para cómo se debe vivir como un pueblo salvado. Los israelitas habían sido rescatados del agarre del Faraón y en el desierto fueron formados como los escogidos de Dios. Mientras que nosotros estamos familiares con los Diez Mandamientos, había en total unas 613 leyes diferentes en el Torá – muchos intentaban explicar en más detalle cómo esos Mandamientos debe ser aplicados a la vida diaria. Las leyes eran para ayudarles a vivir en comunidad y prevenir las clases de maldades personales y sociales que podrían destruirlos. Con una lista tan larga, seguramente los escribas tenían sus propias favoritas. Cuando Jesús recibió la pregunta acerca de cuál de éstas era la más importante, se refirió solamente a dos:
el Shema de Deuteronomio 6:4-5 – ama al Señor con todo lo que eres.
Levítico 19:18 – ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.
Jesús tomó no solamente los Diez Mandamientos, son todas las 613 leyes y las redujo a siete palabras: Ama a Dios y a tu prójimo.
Un profesor de banda jubilado en mi inglesia recientemente me habló sobre el hacer las reglas en sus clases. Al principio tenía reglas sobre cada infracción posible y sobre cualquier comportamiento un estudiante podría manifestar. Pero pasaba tanto tiempo en hacerlos cumplir y en debatir con los estudiantes sobre las reglas que apenas había tiempo para la instrucción. Así que simplificó todo hasta que tenía solamente dos reglas: 1) Respétense unos a otros y 2) Hagan su parte.
En vez de guardar siempre contra lo que podría ocurrir, este profesor creó un ambiente en la su clase que era positiva alentada activamente y enfocada en nuestras relaciones uno con el otro. Estos dos mandamientos se centran en relaciones de amor. El amor es la norma para cómo hemos de compartirnos. El amor define quiénes somos. El amor es la cerca que nos guarda de actividad dañina hacia nosotros mismos o otras personas.
Siempre me he enfocado aquí en la respuesta de Jesús y tengo que confesar que demasiado frecuentemente he ignorado la respuesta del experto legal. Afirma la respuesta de Jesús y entonces proclama que éstas son “más que todos los holocaustos y sacrificios.” Y esto me causó pensar en esa aula de clase otra vez. Pues, todos los holocaustos y sacrificios son necesarios solamente después de que rompamos las reglas. Son un mecanismo para restaurarnos a una relación recta con Dios y con otras personas. Pero, si nos enfocamos en nuestras acciones positivas y si vivimos en relación recta para comenzar, esas acciones de reparación son completamente innecesarias.
Lo que este experto legal no podía saber todavía es que el amor de Dios para nosotros estaba creando una manera nueva para estar en relación recta con Dios. Como la lectura de Hebreos nos acuerda, Cristo se ofreció de una vez por todas para que pudiéramos ser librados del peso de nuestros pecados y ser puestos en libertad para amar y servir a Dios con cada parte de nuestro ser. Aún cuando faltamos en hacer lo que es correcto, Dios ya nos ha limpiado y perdonado de nuestros pecados y derrama el espíritu de amor en nuestras vidas.
Lo único que tenemos que hacer es enfocarnos en amor. El amor de Cristo nos acuerda que todos somos pecadores y necesitamos la gracia de Dios. El amor de Cristo nos muestra lo que son la gracia y la misericordia. El amor de Cristo se agacha en sacrificio en servicio a otros. El amor de Cristo da vida a otros. El amor no es un sentimiento sino una decisión diaria estar en relación recta con Dios con nuestro prójimo.
