20 November, 2022 – 24th Sunday after Pentecost – Christ the King/Reign of Christ Sunday
Jeremiah 23:1-6; Psalm 46; Colossians 1:11-20; Luke 23:33-43
Luke 23:33-43 says: “When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.”
Jesus was not the only one who died that day. Two thieves accompanied him in his death. Apparently, the thieves were guilty. In addition, they could have been part of a revolutionary activity. The word used to describe them is revolutionary.
Whatever the crime may have been, they were caught, and sentenced to die with Jesus. When Jesus was being crucified, the thieves were also being crucified. When Jesus was raised on the cross, they also were raised.
These two thieves, full of anguish and regret, should have cried out desperately cursing God, cursing the Romans, cursing the Jews, etc. But the Jews didn’t even interest these thieves. They only thought about Jesus.
“35 And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, ‘He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!’ 36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, 37 and saying, ‘If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!’ 39 One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, ‘Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!’”
Suddenly something marvelous happened. God began to work in the heart of one of the thieves. Finally he began to understand the truth about himself and about Jesus. Even though moments before, he also had been cursing Jesus.
“40 But the other rebuked him, saying, ‘Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.’ 42 Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’”
What es that Jesus answered him? He did not reproach him at all. Nor did Jesus complain. Rather he said: “‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.’”
In this story we can see that the mercy and the salvation of God are a free gift that Jesus gives to all those that come to him.
As Jesus spoke to the thief, he speaks to us also. He gives us the security of salvation. The thief who believed did three things:
First, he recognized his own need. I refer to his spiritual need. He needed compassion since he was about to die. And the most important thing was the he recognized that he was a sinner and he needed to be saved.
In other moments of his life, he surely had tried to justify his need. But here, he reacted and confessed: “‘41 And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.””
In the second place, having admitted that he was a sinner, and that he needed a savior, he recognized that Jesus was that Savior. But he knew that Jesus was the innocent Son of God, and he recognized that Jesus was King.
Finally, he said: “remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus accepted him right there and he promised that that very day, they would be together in paradise.
Say you were that thief, if you could do away with all of your sins, giving them to Christ, accepting that he is the King and Son of God, and that only in him is there salvation, would you be able to receive the promise to be with Christ, and with God the Father eternally? “43 He replied, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.’”
Let us embrace this promise of God for you and for me. It is wonderful to know that there is still hope in the eternal salvation of Christ Jesus. Amen.

“Hoy estarás conmigo en el paraíso”
Memorándum para los que predican
Lk: 23:33-43. 24th Sunday After Pentecost, Christ the king/Reign of ChristLucas 23:33-43 dice, Cuando llegaron al lugar llamado de la Calavera, lo crucificaron allí, lo mismo que a los malhechores, uno a la derecha de Jesús y otro a Su izquierda.
Jesús no fue el único que murió en aquel día. Dos ladrones lo acompañaron en su muerte. Aparentemente, los ladrones eran culpables. También podrían haber sido parte de una actividad revolucionaria. La palabra usada para describirlos es revolucionario.
Cualquiera que hubiera sido el crimen, ellos fueron atrapados, y sentenciados a morir con Jesús. Cuando Jesús estaba siendo crucificado, los ladrones también estaban siendo crucificados. Cuando Jesús fue levantado en la cruz, ellos también fueron levantados.
Estos dos ladrones, llenos de angustia y aflicción, deben de haber gritado desesperadamente, maldiciendo a Dios, a los romanos, a los judíos etc. Pero a los judíos no les interesaban estos ladrones. Ellos solo pensaban en Jesús.
35 Mientras el pueblo observaba, los gobernantes se burlaban de Él y decían: Ya que salvó a otros, que se salve a sí mismo, si en verdad es el Cristo, el escogido de Dios. 36 También los soldados se burlaban de él; hasta se acercaron y le ofrecieron vinagre,
37 mientras decían: Si eres el Rey de los judíos, ¡sálvate a ti mismo! 39 Uno de los malhechores, lo insultaba y le decía: Si tú eres el Cristo, ¡sálvate a ti mismo y sálvanos a nosotros!
De repente algo maravilloso sucedió. Dios comenzó a obrar en el corazón de uno de los ladrones. Finalmente, comenzó a entender la verdad acerca de sí mismo,y acerca de Jesús.! Aunque momentos antes, posiblemente él también había estado maldiciendo a Jesus.
40 Entonces se volvió hacia su compañero, lo reprendió y le dijo: ¿Ni siquiera ahora, que sufres la misma condena, temes a Dios? 41 Lo que nosotros ahora padecemos es justo, porque estamos recibiendo lo que merecían nuestros hechos, pero éste no cometió ningún crimen. 42 Y a Jesús le dijo: Acuérdate de mí cuando llegues a tu reino.
¿Qué es lo que Jesús le contestó? no le reprocho nada, ni siquiera un reclamo. Jesús Más bien, le dijo: 43 de cierto te digo que hoy mismo estarás conmigo en el paraíso..
En esta historia podemos ver que la misericordia de Dios y que la salvación es un don gratuito que Jesús le da a todos aquellos que acuden a Él.
Como Jesus le habló al ladrón, Él nos habla a nosotros también, él nos da la seguridad de la salvación. El ladrón, que creyó hizo tres cosas:
Primero, él reconoció su propia necesidad. Me refiero a su necesidad espiritual, él necesitaba compasión ya que estaba a punto de morir y lo más importante fue que reconoció que él era pecador y que necesitaba ser salvo.
En otros momentos de su vida, él seguro que hubiera tratado de justificar su necesidad. Pero aquí, reaccionó Él confesó: 41 Lo que nosotros ahora padecemos ES JUSTO, porque estamos recibiendo lo que merecían nuestros hechos.
En segundo lugar el , habiendo admitido que él era pecador, y que necesitaba un salvador él reconoció que Jesús era ese Salvador, pero él supo que Jesús era el Hijo inocente de Dios, él reconoció que Jesús era Rey.
Y por último el dijo. Le dijo: Acuérdate de mí cuando llegues a Tu reino. Jesus lo aceptó ahí mismo y le prometió que ese mismo día, estarían juntos en el paraíso.
Si tú fueras como ese ladrón si tú pudieras deshacerte de tus pecados entregando los a Cristo, aceptando que él es el Rey el hijo de Dios y que solamente en él hay salvación, podrías recibir la promesa de estar con Cristo, y con Dios Padre Eternamente. 43 Entonces Jesús le dijo: De cierto te digo que hoy estarás conmigo en el paraíso.
Abracemos esta promesa de Dios para ti y para mi, es maravilloso saber que aún hay esperanza en una salvación Eterna en Cristo Jesus Amen
