February 12, 2023 – Sixth Sunday After Epiphany
Deuteronomy 30:15-20; Psalm 119:1-8; 1 Corinthians 3:1-9; Matthew 5:21-37
Before we go any farther diving into the texts for today, I want to invite you to stop and pause and make a list. Write down all of the things that are taking up your time yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Everything! From walking the dog, to the hours you will serve at church, to the television shows you watch. This doesn’t have to be a precise list, but it is simply an opportunity to notice how we are spending our time.
What does it feel like to write it all down? If you are anything like me, there might be some sense of being overwhelmed. Or maybe a bit of guilt for how much time you spent playing Candy Crush. Or maybe you see that you need to get more sleep or time to rest and play.
Every single day of our lives, we are bombarded with choices and are pulled by many commitments. We are asked to live within multiple communities of obligation: family, work, church, boards. The world is exhausting and fast paced and chaotic. And there are so many good things that we can and should be doing. How do we balance it all?
In Deuteronomy, Moses reminds us that we have a choice in this world between the things that give us life and the things that take life away. As he stood with the people on the edge of the promised land, he placed before them life and death, blessing and curse. And the people quickly chose life! Who wouldn’t right? They rededicated their lives to God.
But then they crossed into the land of milk and honey and before they realized it, they got caught up again in all the distractions of their lives. They found themselves broken and scattered and before too long, falling apart in exile. In one of the alternate readings for this Sunday from Sirach (Deuterocanonical), we hear “If you choose, you can keep the commandments, and to act faithfully is a matter of your own choice.” (Sirach 15:15). And yet, as Paul reminds us, so many of us are infants who live according to the flesh and can’t help ourselves (1 Cor. 3:1). Jesus is ever so aware of our human failings, which he lays out in the Sermon on the Mount text for today. Jesus warns us not to even make vows or promises to God, but simply to say “yes” or “no.” (Matthew 5:33-37)
If we truly want to choose the ways of God, it is not enough to try to follow the rules. We have to make room for the Holy Spirit to transform us. We have to spend time with our Lord. We need to clear some space in the chaos of the things that tug on us. Perhaps one of the greatest gifts that we can offer to one another is Sabbath. The gift of space and time to simply let God into our lives. Sabbath, at its core, is taking time to remember that we do not create life and everything is not our responsibility… it all comes from and belongs to God. And only with God’s help can we see growth. As Moses tells the people, “Love God, listen to God, embrace God! God is life itself.” (paraphrase of 30:20)
One of the things we might try when we enter those Sabbath moments is an Ignatian spiritual practice that helps us weigh those everyday choices. Think about one of those many things on the list you made. Imagine you are holding it in front of you in your hands. And then picture to each side of you the choices of life and death, blessing and curse. As you hold that activity and think about all that comes along with it, which direction does it take you? Is it a burden or a joy? Does it give you energy or drain it away? Will it serve or harm future generations? Does it honor God or is it pulling you away?
We simply cannot say yes to everything… no matter how good it might seem. We cannot create space for everything… as much as we might want to. And sometimes when we overstretch ourselves, we slip into those very practices that can cause harm. So may we all with God’s help, weigh our choices. God – help us to say yes to the things that give us life and no to the things that take it away.

Antes de considerar las lecturas para hoy, quiero invitar que Ud. se detenga y que pause y que haga una lista. Escriba todas las cosas de ayer, de hoy, y de mañana que le cuestan tiempo. ¡Todas las cosas! De pasear al perro, a las horas que servirá en la iglesia, a los programas de televisión que Ud. mira. No tiene que ser una lista exacta, pero simplemente es una oportunidad para notar cómo pasamos nuestro tiempo.
¿Cómo siente escribirlo todo? Si Ud. es como yo, es posible que hay un sentido de estar inundado/a. O quizás un poco de culpa por cuánto tiempo pasó jugando Candy Crush. O quizás Ud. ve que necesita dormir más para descansar y jugar.
Cada día de nuestras vidas, somos bombardeados con opciones y nos sentimos presionados por muchos compromisos. Vivimos en muchas comunidades de obligaciones: familia, trabajo, iglesia, juntas. El mundo es agotador y acelerado y caótico. Y hay muchas buenas cosas que podemos y debemos hacer. ¿Cómo podemos balancearlos todo?
En Deuteronomio, Moisés nos acuerda que tenemos una opción en este mundo entre las cosas que nos dan vida y las cosas que quitan la vida. Como se paró ante su gente próximo a la tierra prometida, puso ante ellos la vida y la muerte, la bendición y la maldición. ¡Y el pueblo rápidamente escogió la vida! ¿Quién no haría esto, verdad? Dedicaron de nuevo sus vidas a Dios.
Pero entonces cruzaron a la tierra de miel y leche and antes de que se dieron cuenta, estaban absortos en las distracciones de sus vidas. Se encontraron quebrantados y dispersados y pronto, se derrumban en el exilio. En una de las lecturas alternas para este domingo de Sirácida o Eclesiástico, oímos “Si quieres, puedes cumplir lo que él manda, y puedes ser fiel haciendo lo que le gusta” (Sirácida 15:15 VP). Pero todavía, como Pablo nos acuerda, tantos de nosotros somos infantes que viven según la carne y nos podemos ayudarnos a nosotros mismos (1 Cor. 3:1). Jesús siempre es consciente de nuestros debilidades humanas, las cuales presenta en la lectura del Sermón en el Monte para hoy. Jesús nos advierte ni hacer promesas ni votos a Dios, sino simplemente decir “Sí, sí” o “No, no” (Mateo 5:33-37).
Si de verdad queremos escoger los caminos de Dios, no bastar tratar de seguir las reglas. Tenemos que crear espacio para el Espíritu Santo para transformarnos. Tenemos que pasar tiempo con nuestro Señor. Necesitamos desobstruir espacio en el caos de las cosas que nos atraen. Quizás unos de los dones más grandes que podemos ofrecernos unos a otros es sabbat. El don de espacio y tiempo para que Dios simplemente pueda entrar en nuestras vidas. Sabbat, en su corazón, es tomando tiempo para recordar que nosotros no creamos la vida y todas las cosas no son nuestra responsabilidad . . . todo viene de y pertenece a Dios. Y solamente con la ayuda de Dios podemos ver crecimiento. Como Moisés dice al pueblo, “Amad a Dios, atended a Dios, abrazad a Dios. Dios es la vida misma” (paráfrasis de Deut. 30:20).
Una de las cosa que pudiéramos tratar cuando entramos en esos momentos de sabbat es una práctica espiritual de los seguidores de Íñigo que nos ayuda a evaluar esa opciones diarias. Piense en una de las muchas cosas en la lista que hizo. Imagínese que la tiene en la mano ante Ud. Y entonces imagínese al lado de la lista las opciones de vida y de muerte, bendición y maldición. Como considera esa actividad y como piensa en todo que viene con esa actividad, ¿en qué dirección es Ud. llevado? ¿Es carga o alegría? ¿Le da energía o se la quita? ¿Servirá a o causará daño a las generaciones del futuro? ¿Honra a Dios o le atrae fuera de Dios?
Simplemente no podemos decir “Sí, sí” a todo . . . no importa cuán bueno parece. No podemos crear espacio para todo . . . tanto como querríamos. Y algunas veces cuando nos estiramos demasiado, caemos en esas mismas prácticas que pueden dañarnos. Así que, que todos nosotros con la ayuda de Dios, evaluemos nuestras opciones. Dios – ayúdanos a decir “Sí, sí” a las cosas que nos dan vida y “No, no” a las cosas que la quitan.
