Broken Bread

August 1, 2021 – 10th Sunday after Pentecost
John 6:24-35
How many people in the world are needing spiritual bread to feed their soul and have peace in their hearts, and how many are going about search for material bread that only satisfies for a few hours and they end up losing their eternal life? Jesus presents us with the true bread and offers the eternal salvation.
In the text, on the following day the crowd discovers that Jesus and his disciples have gone. So, they get into boats and go to Capernaum in seasrch of Jesus (v. 24). Surely, few of the five thousand (or ten or twenty thousand with women and children) actually search for Jesus on the sea en their small boats. Verse 24 doesn’t tell us because the crowd is searching for Jesus.
Upon finding Jesus, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” (v. 25). The crowd only ask about the way in which Jesus arrived at Capernaum which is interesting because the people wanted to know how and when Jesus had arrived.
Jesus ignores the question and scolds them for the superficial interest that they show. “Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves” (v. 26). Jesus confronts the crowd and tells them that they are following him only for the physical and temporal benefits instead of following him to satisfy the spiritual hunger that is in them. Their focus was on the material hunger and not on what is most important such as the spiritual gifts that they could receive from Jesus.
“Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you” (v. 27a). Jesus, knowing their thoughts and hearts challenges the crowd to raise their sights and see beyond the physical so that their sights are set on God as a Divine being and not as someone that has the power to feed them only, but rather as the most high God that became human flesh to offer salvation to us by means of believing en the son of God. As is stated in the Bible: “so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (John 3:16).
Jesus knows that physical feeding is important for humanity, but now he asks the people to accept “the food that gives eternal life” which can only be found in Him. “For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal” (v. 27b). God the Father has set his seal on the Son so that he might fulfill his mission here on earth and that seal is revealed when God told him during his baptism as a voice from heaven said: “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased” (Mark 1:11).
JOHN 6:28-34 THIS IS THE WORK OF GOD – THAT YOU BELIEVE.
(v. 28). The people wanted to know what they should do to be saved? He simply responds that they should believe in him. That is the first work of God, to believe in Jesus. They don’t have to do anything else, but they were hoping for a different response from Jesus. They thought that they should do something to save themselves – other than just believing in Jesus. Many people nowadays think the same thing, that by doing good works they are going to save their souls and Jesus says – Believe in the Son of God for your salvation.
(v. 30, 31). They had seen so many miracles that Jesus had done that his fame had reached to all parts and they even kept asking him what more could he do. They had seen him heal the sick, make the blind see, raise the dead, make lepers clean, and they had just witnessed the miraculous multiplication of the bread and fish – and still they kept asking for signs. Besides, I believe that many of them knew the signs from the beginning of creation. The first sign that comes to mind is when God put the rainbow in the clouds as a sign of his covenant with Noah that he would never destroy the world by means of a flood again (Genesis 9:12). God has use signs in different ways – symbols or miracles that signal beyond ourselves to something greater.
The demand of the crowd represents the response of the common people that are confronted with a new situation. Jesus has presented them a new bread that is the same as the one in which they should believe. But they want to see something even greater – as when Moses fed the people of Israel with manna when they were in the wilderness. According to them, Jesus gave the crowd common bread, but Moses gave Israel heavenly bread. In other words, they were saying that the bread that Moses gave was more special than what Jesus had. The people have seen Jesus do a miracle, but now they expect him to equal the power that Moses had.
There are marvelous things that occur around us everyday, but we don’t see them. Having accustomed ourselves to them, we just don’t notice them. Jesus responds to the crowd telling them: “Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” It was God, not Moses, who gave the manna. In other words, the bread of God is the incarnation that came down from heaven. The bread of God gives us life. The manna only sustains physical life, but the true bread of God gives eternal life and Jesus says, I am in front of you.
The crowd says, “Sir, give us this bread always” (v. 34). Finally they ask for that bread. It is as when Jesus touches your hear and makes you think, and you can see things in another dimension. You accept him and believe in him, and your life changes. Only God has the divine power to change our mind, our character, and above all to build us up and give us a new bread.
JOHN 6:35. I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE
“Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” The crowd did not understand when Jesus spoke of the “bread of God which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world” (v. 33). Then, Jesus clarifies his meaning. “I am the bread of life,” he says (v. 35a). Jesus reveals his identity and lets people know that he is the bread of life, the son of God that has come to redeem the world from their sins and to offer them salvation. He is the great I AM, he offers us eternal life and an eternal salvation so that all those who believe in him can be saved. The true bread is Jesus Christ. Receive it. Accept it. And believe in the one who died on the cross and was raised to give us eternal salvation. Amen.

¿Qué clase de pan le gustaría comer ?
Cuántas personas en el mundo están necesitando pan espiritual para alimentar su alma y tener paz en sus corazones, y cuantas andan por la vida buscando el pan material que solamente satisface unas cuantas horas y pierden la vida eterna. Jesús nos presenta el pan verdadero y ofrece la Salvación eterna.
El próximo día la multitud descubre que Jesús y los discípulos se han ido, entonces, se suben a los botes y se van a Capernaum en busca de Jesús (v. 24). Seguramente, pocas de las cinco mil personas (o diez o veinte mil con mujeres y niños) actualmente buscan a Jesus en el mar en sus botes pequeños. Versículo 24 no nos dice porque la multitud está buscando a Jesús,
Al encontrar a Jesús, le preguntaron, “Rabí, ¿cuándo llegaste acá?” (v. 25). La multitud intenta preguntar solo sobre la manera en la cual Jesús llegó hasta Capernaum, es interesante porque las personas querían saber cómo y cuándo había llegado Jesús.
Jesús ignora la pregunta y les reprende por el interés superficial que demuestran. “De cierto, de cierto os digo, que me buscáis, no porque habéis visto las señales, sino porque comisteis el pan y os hartasteis” (v. 26). Jesus confronta a la multitud y les dice que le siguen solamente por los beneficios físicos y temporales en vez de seguirle para saciar su hambre espiritual que hay en ellos, su enfoque estaba en el hambre material y no en lo más importante como son los dones espirituales que podían recibir de Jesus.
“Trabajad no por la comida que perece, mas por la comida que á vida eterna permanece, la cual el Hijo del Hombre os dará” (v. 27a). Jesús conociendo sus pensamientos y corazones reta a la multitud que alcen la vista y vean más allá de lo físico, que su mirada está puesta en Dios como un ser divino y no como alguien que tiene el poder para darles de comer solamente, si no como el Dios altísimo que se encarnó en la humanidad para ofrecernos su salvación por medio de creer en el hijo de Dios. Como dice en su Palabra “para que todo aquel que en él cree, no se pierda, mas tenga vida eterna.” Jn 3:16.
Jesús sabe que la alimentación física es importante para la humanidad pero ahora, pide que la gente acepte “la comida que da vida eterna ” que solamente en él la pueden encontrarla.
“Porque á éste señaló el Padre, que es Dios” (v. 27b). Dios Padre ha puesto su sello sobre el Hijo, para que cumpliera con su misión aquí en la tierra y ese sello está revelado cuando él le dijo durante su bautizo, y una voz del cielo dijo, “Tú eres mi Hijo amado; en ti tomo contentamiento” (Marcos 1:11).
JUAN 6:28-34. ÉSTA ES LA OBRA DE DIOS, QUE CREÁIS.
(v. 28). Las personas querían saber qué deberían hacer para ser salvos? El simplemente le responde que crean en mí. Esa sería la primera obra creer en Jesús, no tienen que hacer nada más, pero ellos esperaban otra respuesta de Jesús, ellos pensaban es que deberían hacer algo para salvarse menos creer en Jesús. Muchas personas hoy en día piensan lo mismo que con hacer obras de caridad van a salvar su alma y Jesus dice creer en el hijo de Dios para tu salvación.
(v. 30,31 ). Habían visto tantos milagros que Jesus había hecho ya su fama estaba en todas partes y aun seguían preguntando qué más hace, habian visto a los enfermos sanar, los ciego veían, los muertos resucitaron , los leprosos eran limpios y acababa de presenciar el milagro de la multiplicación de los panes y los peces y aún seguían pidiendo señales, a demás yo creo que muchos de ellos conocían las señales desde el principio de la creación, la primer señal que se viene a mi mente es cuando Dios puso un arco Iris en las nubes como señal de su pacto con Noe que nunca destruiría la tierra por medio de un diluvio otra vez (Génesis 9:12), Dios ha utilizado señales de diferentes maneras – símbolos o milagros que señalan más allá de sí mismos hacia algo más grande.
La demanda de la multitud representa la respuesta de gente común que se ve confrontada con una situación nueva. Jesús les ha presentado un pan nuevo que es el mismo en el cual debería de creer, pero ellos aún esperaban ver algo más grande , como cuando Moisés alimentó con maná al pueblo de Israel cuando estuvieron en el desierto. Según ellos Jesús le dio a la muchedumbre pan corriente; Moisés le dio a Israel pan del cielo. eso es lo que ellos decían en otras palabras el pan que Moises dio fue más especial, que el que tú tienes, la gente ha visto a Jesús hacer un milagro, pero ahora esperan más que se iguale al poder que Moises tenía.
Hay cosas maravillosas que pasan a nuestro alrededor todos los días, pero no las vemos. Habiéndonos acostumbrado a ellas, no las tomamos en cuenta. Jesús le responde a la multitud, diciéndoles, “De cierto, de cierto os digo: No os dio Moisés pan del cielo; mas mi Padre os da el verdadero pan del cielo. Porque el pan de Dios es aquel que descendió del cielo y da vida al mundo” fue Dios no Moisés él quien dio maná , en otras palabras el pan de Dios es la encarnación que baja del cielo, el pan de Dios nos da vida, el maná sostiene la vida física, pero el pan verdadero de Dios da vida eterna y estoy enfrente de ustedes.
La multitud dice, “Señor, danos siempre este pan” (v. 34). Al final piden de ese pan, es como cuando Jesus toca tu corazón y te hace entrar en razón, y puedes ver las cosas con otra dimensión, lo aceptas y creen en él, y la vida cambia, solo Dios tiene el poder divino para cambiar tu mente, carácter, y sobre todo nos edifica y nos da un nuevo pan.
JUAN 6:35. YO SOY EL PAN DE VIDA
35 Y Jesús les dijo: Yo soy el pan de vida: el que á mí viene, nunca tendrá hambre; y el que en mí cree, no tendrá sed jamás. La multitud no comprendió cuando Jesús habló del “pan de Dios es aquel que descendió del cielo y da vida al mundo” (v. 33), entonces, Jesús clarifica su significado. “Yo soy el pan de vida,” él dice (v. 35a). Jesus revela su identidad y se da a conocer que él es el pan de Vida el hijo de Dios que ha venido a redimir al mundo de sus pecados y a ofrecer su salvación, él es él Gran Yo soy, el que nos ofrece vida eterna y una salvación eterna para que todos los que creamos en él podamos ser salvos. El verdadero pan es Cristo Jesus recibelo, aceptarlo y cree en el que murió en una cruz y resucitó para darnos la salvación eterna. Amen.
