Martin offers a generally winsome description of progressive Protestantism. Yes, he cherry-picks some whacky examples (young earth creationism is a tiny slice of the traditionalist Christian pie), but folks all over the landscape do it. The real balancing act will come with what to do with Jesus, whom Martin emphasizes must be at the center of any Christian faith. Was Jesus a first century John Brown, whose "body lies a moldering in the grace while his soul goes marching on?" Every honest Christian of whatever stripe takes portions of scripture 'seriously but not literally,' though traditionalists tend to align with Wesley's guidance that the text itself usually will reveal the preferred path of serious and/or literally by its context. All in all, a good starting point for constructive discussion...
