LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Philander Smith University, a historically Black United Methodist college in Little Rock, Arkansas, has received a $19 million unrestricted gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, the largest single contribution in the University’s 147-year history.
The university expects the extraordinary investment to strengthen its ability to “advance its mission of educating academically accomplished students who are grounded as advocates for social justice and determined to change the world for the better.”
Because the gift is unrestricted, it gives Philander Smith flexibility to determine how best to invest these dollars for long-term impact. The Board of Trustees and university leader plan to “carefully steward the funds in alignment with the institution’s mission and strategic priorities.”
While no final decisions have been made, areas of consideration reportedly include:– Expanding student scholarships and financial aid– Investing in faculty excellence and academic innovation– Enhancing campus facilities and technology– Strengthening the university’s endowment for future growth and stability
“This gift is a resounding vote of confidence in our mission and our momentum,” said Dr. Maurice D. Gipson, who is in his first year as university president and CEO. “It positions us to invest boldly in student success, facilities enhancement, and programs that prepare the next generation of Philander Smith leaders. We are profoundly grateful for this transformational support, which allows us to move Philander First with renewed purpose and vision.”
MacKenzie Scott is a billionaire philanthropist known for her large, unrestricted donations to a wide range of charitable organizations focused on social justice, gender equality, poverty, and education. That includes Historical Black Colleges and Universities like Philander Smith. Formerly married to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, she has donated billions of dollars through her philanthropic vehicle, Yield Giving, often moving quickly to trust organizations to decide how to best use the funds, a style that distinguishes her from traditional philanthropy
Dr. Tionna Jenkins, Chair of the university board of trustees, said the gift underscores the institution’s enduring value and promise. “Ms. Scott’s generosity helps ensure that the university continues to thrive and expand its impact for generations to come.”
