Call to Action
Desert Southwest Conference Newsletter | June 14, 2025
As the Desert Southwest Conference gathered for the 41st Annual Conference Session in Las Vegas, a faithful group assembled for a morning prayer vigil in response to immigration-related protests and recent federal enforcement actions. This public witness, grounded in prayer and presence, was more than a symbolic gesture; it was an urgent act of solidarity with our immigrant siblings.
The vigil was one part of a broader movement. The Asylum/Refugee/Immigration Task Force of the Desert Southwest Conference released a powerful Call to Action: Walking with Migrant Communities Toward Justice and Hope, declaring that “we do not act with resignation but with bold and active faith.” Rooted in Matthew 25:35, “I was a stranger and you welcomed me,” the call outlines a clear 90-day strategy for advocacy, accompaniment, and equipping ally communities with tools for justice and transformation.
It also echoes the urgent message issued by the Western Jurisdiction College of Bishops, who released a joint video statement decrying the militarized presence targeting immigrants, especially in the Los Angeles area. In that statement, Bishop Carlo A. Rapanut, Episcopal Leader of the Desert Southwest Conference, said:
“I speak to you today not only as your bishop, but also as an immigrant whose heart is deeply broken as it is deeply connected to the struggles of our siblings in the Los Angeles area… Let us stand united as one body, upholding our immigrant neighbors with the same compassion and care that scripture demands.”
The video features every bishop of the Western Jurisdiction speaking out against fear-based narratives and unjust policies, calling instead for faithful, compassionate, and courageous response.
The Task Force’s Call to Action builds on this same foundation of Gospel-rooted hope. It includes commitments to:
- Organize public prayer vigils (both in-person and virtual)
- Provide pastoral and practical support for migrant families
- Offer ally training, legal advocacy, and theological resources
- Engage local churches and committees in direct action
- Host a strategic immigration forum to chart the work through 2026
This sacred work is not limited to one committee or one moment. It belongs to the whole Church. If you have questions about this work or the Call to Action, please email CallToAction@dscumc.org.
