"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." – Psalm 46:1
As the sun rose this morning (March 26) it revealed that a tragic accident occurred in Baltimore. As most were asleep, the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being struck by a cargo vessel. Two individuals have already been rescued as intense efforts continue to rescue other survivors. There may be as many as seven additional people in the waters of the Patapsco River, which is 50 feet deep where the bridge was struck. This is an unimaginable tragedy and we grieve with families who are awaiting news of their loved ones. As of this writing, it appears those on the vessel are safe.
May we avoid any speculation about how this horrific tragedy occurred, and instead focus our attention on prayers for those being sought and the first responders who are providing their services and care.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore has declared a state of emergency. We know this is a key thoroughfare through Baltimore and a critical artery at one of the nation’s busiest ports. It will impact our area for a significant period of time.
We also know that God is our refuge and strength, especially during times of tragedy and unforeseen disasters. We are people of deep faith and resilience, and we unite to pray for all who have been and will be affected.
Tragedies like these shake the foundation upon which we live our lives; we can take so much for granted. Watching the images of the bridge collapse, one can’t help but be moved by the fragility of our world. It makes us humble and vulnerable. But as we enter into Holy Week, we know that God is with us at all times and in all circumstances. God is with those who plunged into the water. God is with those who are being treated. God is with those who are performing rescue efforts. God is with the families awaiting news and clinging to hope. God is with us. That is our true foundation, comfort and strength.
