Nominations have opened for the 2023 Champions of the Earth, the UN’s highest environmental honor. The aim of this year’s award is to recognize the contribution of outstanding leaders, individuals and organizations, from government, civil society and the private sector developing and implementing innovative and sustainable solutions and policies to eliminate plastic pollution. The nominations will remain open until April 14, 2023.
Following a historic UN Environment Assembly resolution in 2022 to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment with the ambition to complete the negotiations by end of 2024, the year 2023 is critical to ensuring the world comes together to end the scourge of plastic pollution, according to the Faiths for Earth newsletter. This year’s World Environment Day, hosted by Cote d'Ivoire, also will focus on efforts to #BeatPlasticPollution.
To date, the Champions of the Earth Award has recognized 111 laureates, ranging from world leaders to technology inventors. They include 26 world leaders, 69 individuals and 16 groups or organizations.
