As part of this year's Season of Creation, the World Council of Churches (WCC) will co-host a high-level webinar on September 10. This event will bring together faith leaders, government officials, and climate advocates to discuss the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty (FFNPT) and its role in securing a just energy transition.
"The moral imperative is clear. We must support frameworks like the FFNPT to protect our planet and ensure justice for those most affected by climate change," stated Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay, WCC general secretary.
Speakers like Susana Muhamad, Colombia's minister of Environment, and Tzeporah Berman, chair of the FFNPT Initiative, will explore the current challenges of fossil fuel dependency and how faith communities can drive this global effort.
The event will also feature powerful testimonies, including Rev. Rachel Mash of the Anglican Communion, who will explain why the Anglican Church has endorsed the treaty.
"This is a critical moment for faith communities to unite," said Rev. Dr Kenneth Mtata, WCC programme director for Public Witness and Diakonia. "By endorsing the Faith Letter for the FFNPT, we send a strong message that bold action is needed now."
The Production Gaps Report shows governments plan to produce more fossil fuels than the Paris Agreement allows. The FFNPT calls for a global framework to phase out fossil fuels while ensuring a just transition, especially for vulnerable communities.
