Unity & Sex Colloquy
The first academic colloquy to aid the Commission on A Way Forward was held in March at Candler School of Theology in Atlanta.
Another academic theological colloquy, “Missio Dei and the United States: Toward a Faithful United Methodist Witness," will be held in November by The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) and the Association of United Methodist Theological Schools (AUMTS), the two groups that sponsored a similar event in March.
"Missio Dei" will take place Nov. 12-15, 2017 at United Methodist-related Boston School of Theology at Boston University in support of the Commission on a Way Forward.
The event's goal is "to engage United Methodist scholars and bishops in constructive dialogue that will open new pathways in our understanding and faithful practice of the Missio Dei," according to a press release from GBHEM. Participants will "explore the future of the church from a missional perspective, and examine how to reengage our Wesleyan heritage to participate in the Missio Dei," according to the press release.
More than 30 United Methodist scholars and 15 United Methodist bishops have been invited to prepare academic-style papers for discussion at the gathering. The event will be open to public dependent on seating capacity, in keeping with the church policy on open meetings.
A study guide and book will be published after the gathering to share the papers and discussions from the event. "Publications will be provided to the Commission on a Way Forward, Boards of Ordained Ministry and others to encourage informed and substantive theological conversation about the practice of the Missio Dei and the future of the denomination," said the press release.
