But most Christians agreed with him

But here's the thing. During his lifetime, the only objections to him that I heard from Christians were about his choice of locations for his protests. I never heard of any Christians who objected to the substance of his message. The Bible quite clearly says that homosexuals are to be put to death. United Methodists believe that "homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching". I never saw any difference between what he said and what the vast majority of Christians actually believe. Now he's dead and can't talk back, but where were the Christian voices in opposition to his hateful rhetoric while he was alive?

Even today, we can see that those who represent Christianity agree with him in substance. Franklin Graham, James Dobson, Pat Robertson, Rick Santorum, Mike Huckabee, William Donohue, and so on and so on all agree with Phelps. If there were those who thought he was wrong, why did they choose to remain silent all this time?

hope he's in heaven

I think hell is only temporary. Fred might have sent himself there but I wouldn't want him to stay. I had a professor in seminary who said that heaven is where Anne Frank forgives Adolph Hitler. I think it also might be where Matthew Shepherd forgives Fred Phelps.

Hell's a state of mind

For some, hell is knowing there are others in heaven they believe do not deserve to be there.
