Mark 6:1-13
English translation by Paul I. Burrow
Jesus in Nazareth
He left that place and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. 2 On the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, “Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands!
Really Jesus was looking for a way to make a connection with his community, socially and spiritually. I think it’s beautiful to see your family and your community united – well, happy, healthy, active, etc. The desire of the master was exactly that, to carry peace and tranquility, salvation, but the most surprising thing is that the community that saw him grow up and that knew him from his childhood didn’t accept him as he was – “The Son of God.” They did not receive him; on the contrary there were scandalized and they rejected him. Currently we are living in similar times. Jesus makes himself present in the families, in the communities, in the different nations of the world and there continue to be people that do not want to accept the love of Christ for different reasons. They begin the signaling, the criticisms, making judgments, etc. But what is truly marvelous is that Jesus did not stop in the face of such circumstances. He and his disciples continue teaching, preaching, healing, doing miracles, looking for other places, where, if they accepted him and there was a need “he went about among the villages teaching” (vs. 6b).
The Mission of the Twelve Disciples
At the end of the previous paragraph we saw that Jesus “went about among the villages teaching.” It was after this when “He called the twelve and began to send them out.” The rejection of the people in Nazareth couldn’t stop the mission of the Son of God while there was a world needing to listen to the Gospel of the Kingdom of God. Regarding the idea of sending out the twelve to preach, not only had the purpose of extending the Kingdom, but it also served so that the apostles could gain experience and especially learn to trust in the Master while being far from him. This type of training would have to prepare them for the day when the Lord, once finished with the work of the Cross, returned to heaven and was no longer present in the midst of them.
Jesus prepares the disciples, gives them specific instructions, trains them, gives them authority, because he knew what they were going to encounter. “And gave them authority over the unclean spirits. 8 He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts.” The disciples of the Lord should only take their staff and the clothes they have on. They should take nothing more for the journey. This could seem like madness, but it would serve them by confirming the constant help of God. They should be looking upwards hoping in God for the provision of the things they needed. Of course, when they returned from this mission, and from others on which the Lord sent them, none of them lamented because they had lacked something. Rather they returned full of joy and admiration for the help of the Lord.
Also, he warned them that they were going to be rejected. “If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.” Nowadays we encounter people that think and act the same as in the times of Jesus, they reject the Word of God. Our mission is to continue and keep on preaching the gospel, taking the good news to all people. The true Christian knows that he or she is not called to execute any type of justice, even though he/she is fully conscious that there is a day of judgment for those who reject the gospel. The declaration of the Lord no only announces that there will be a judgment, but also the criteria with which it will be carried out: a greater revelation, a greater responsibility. Those that heard the gospel preached by the Lord and his disciples would have a clearer light than that which this inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah had.
The preaching of the disciples about repentance: “So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent.” It is an internal change of mind and heart that goes followed by a change of life that produces fruit in new conduct. Repentance implies realizing that the road that they have been following was mistaken. It is something radical that supposes a total change of life.
Conclusion
Jesus continues sending you and me and all believers that are called to preach, live by faith, be obedient, have love for all (good and bad), to produce good fruit, to continue with the mission that has been entrusted to us. The question is: are we willing and ready to continue with such a responsibility to give testimony of Christ? May God bless all. Amen.

Amen.
