2 Samuel 11:26-12:13a; Psalm 51: 1-12; Ephesians 4:1-16; John 6: 24-35

Our Scriptures for Aug 4 are all very “preachable” and timely.  Our biggest task is to choose one and “mine” its treasures deeply!

2 Samuel’s  conclusion to the artful telling of King Davids’s great sin(s) is a natural to pair with Psalm 51, a prayer fleshing out David’s repentance.  With the murder of Uriah, David has completed his despicable cover up.  Now he is free to marry Bathsheba and make their child “legitimate.”  He has gotten away with it!!  No one knows but his loyal general.  But God knows and sends Nathan to confront him.  In a time when ancient kings were a law unto themselves, Nathan reminds David that no one is above God’s law.  (Perhaps it’s not just Kings who need this reminder, but Presidents too?). Generally this confrontation between king and prophet does not go well for the prophet – Elijah, Jeremiah, John, Jesus come to mind—but two things save Nathan.  First, a oblique approach using a story that awakens David’s sense of justice—in a way, inviting David’s best self to return home.  And second,  David genuinely knew what it was like to walk with God and also knew that now he was walking alone.

In repentance he expresses the gnawing agony of sin and its coverup: “for I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.”  How does a person come back from such deep and horrible brokenness?  The solution, as Nathan suggests in verse 12 is to bring the darkness of secret sin into the light of day.  David does not just confess to God, but to the nation.  His sordid story becomes historical record in 2 Samuel and Chronicles.  His personal confession in Psalm 51 becomes part of the temple songbook and a model for sincere confession and the road home. 

What a contrast to the white-washed histories of ancient Kings who used religion to justify their power and perfection!  It’s important to note that David’s repentance restored his relationship with God, but it did not remove the consequences of his sin.  David introduced violence to his house that would continue to trouble his dynastic line for years to come.  Forgiveness can restore relationships, but does not remove the consequences of sin.  Yet amid this sad and sorry story of David and Bathsheba comes a graceful note:  Another child is born to them, Solomon, who will be the King that David could not be.  And, of course, many years later, descended from this union marked by the worst of human sin, will come the greatest King of all.

Ephesians 4 begins with Paul’s patented “therefore,” which signals his move from the theological to the practical.  What does all this theology mean?  What is the final goal of our faith?  Verses 13-15 says it all:  we need to Grow up!   “…to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ.”  This maturity means finding a humble balance between faith and knowledge (verse 13), between honesty and love (verse 15), and most important, between the unity of the Spirit and the diversity of our gifts (verses 3-6, 11-13.) 

I had a talented colleague in ministry whom I resented for years, simply because he was a fabulous teacher.  He had dozens of study groups in his churches, while I struggled to have one or two!  I allowed his gifts to threaten me and tear me down, rather than learn from him and be built up.  What a childish waste of time!  I needed to grow up!  It’s in this diversity of gifts that the Church flourishes, but diversity can fuel feelings of competition, inadequacy and division.  Like a heart out of rhythm with itself, turf wars, committee battles, and jealous ministries beat against one another and leave the Church in ruin.  The recognition that we are “one body,”  that is, on the same team but also needing different gifts, is a key to growing up.  It is also a remedy for burn out, because we do not labor for God alone!

John’s Gospel does not describe the institution of Holy Communion at Jesus’ last supper as the other Gospels do. Instead, he does so in Chapter 6: Jesus’ discourse about the feeding of the 5000.  In a sense, John extends Jesus’ identification with the bread and wine of a specific, holy meal, to anytime and anywhere we find nourishment. Pausing to remember that each meal is a sacrament of God’s love through Christ is only part of it.  It is also remembering that our deepest hungers, our emptiness of soul, can only be met in Him who is the bread of life.  The “I am” sayings of John are unique and give us a different picture of Jesus from the other Gospels.  In the synoptics, Jesus has a tendency to point away from himself, usually redirecting attention and credit to God alone. (Mk 10:18)  But John, the latest Gospel writer, pictures a Jesus whose self-understanding reflects the developing theology of his time. 

In Chapter 6, Jesus, having fed 5,000 (perhaps 10,000 counting women and children) becomes very popular.  The crowds follow him across the Sea of Tiberius, perhaps looking for another free lunch.  Jesus is not impressed with these would-be disciples who demand from him yet another sign “so that they may believe in him.”  Speaking of the miracle of manna during Moses’ time, Jesus offers them something better—himself.  Jesus is himself the ultimate sign of God’s love and God’s desire that all should be saved.  But when he speaks of his flesh and blood being consumed by his followers, Jesus’ popularity plummets.

Sometimes it is easy to believe. Sometimes it is hard. Various signs point us in different directions.  What sustains the disciple’s belief is not the latest sign, but the experience of Jesus’ life & teachings.  “Lord, to whom can we go?  You have the words of eternal life.  We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God” (verses 68-69). Miracles can attract attention and generate excitement, but the true sign that fosters a lasting faith is still seen today: the Holy One of God, preached, taught, and consumed in the midst of the great Congregation.

Es natural emparejar la conclusión de 2 Samuel a la narración ingeniosa del/de los pecado(s) de Rey David con Salmos 51, una oración que desarrolla más el arrepentimiento de David.  Con el asesinato de Urías, David ha completado el encubrimiento despreciable.  Ahora tiene libertad de casarse con Betsabé y hacer “legítimo” el hijo de ellos.  ¡Se ha salido con la suya!  Nadie sabe sino su general leal.  Pero Dios sabe y envía a Natán para confrontarse con David.  En una época cuando los reyes ancianos era más allá de la ley, Natán le acuerda a David que nadie es más allá de la ley de Dios.  (Quizás no es solamente los reyes que necesitan este acuerdo, ¿sino los Presidentes también?).  Generalmente este enfrentamiento entre rey y profeta no sale bien para el profeta – Elías, Jeremías, Juan, Jesús se nos ocurren – pero dos cosas salvan a Natán.  1.  Una estrategia oblicua usando una historia que despierta el sentido de justicia en David – en una manera, invita que la mejor parte de David regrese a casa.  Y 2.  David sabía genuinamente cómo era caminar con Dios y también sabía que ahora estaba caminando sólo.  En arrepentimiento expresa la agonía constante del pecado y su encubrimiento: “porque yo reconozco mis rebeliones, y mi pecado está siempre delante de mí.”  ¿Cómo vuelve una persona de tal daño tan profundo y horrible?  La solución, como sugiere Natán en versículo 12 es lleva la oscuridad del pecado secreto a la luz del día.  David no solamente confiesa a Dios, sino también a la nación.  Su historia sórdida se convierte en crónica en 2 Samuel y Crónicas.  Su confesión personal en Salmos 51 se hace parte del himnario del templo y un ejemplo para confesión sincera y el camino a la casa.  ¡Qué contraste a las historias encubiertas de los reyes ancianos que usaban la religión para justificar su poder y su perfección!  Es importante notar que el arrepentimiento de David restauró su relación con Dios, pero no quitó las consecuencias de su pecado.  David introdujo violencia en su casa que continuaría causando problemas a su línea dinástica durante años en el futuro.  El perdón puede restaurar relaciones, pero no quita la consecuencias del pecado.  Pero, en medio de esta historia triste y lamentable de David y Betsabé viene una nota de gracia: Otro hijo les es nacido, Salomón, quie será el rey que David no podía ser.  Y, claro, muchos años después, descendido de esta unión marcada por lo peor de pecado humano, vendrá el rey más grande de todos.

Efesios 4 comienza con el “pues” o “por esto” patentado de Pablo, que indica su movimiento de lo teológico a lo práctico.  ¿Qué significa toda esta teología?  ¿Cuál es la meta final de nuestra fe?  Versículos 13-15 lo dicen todo: ¡hemos de madurar!  “a la medida de la estatura de la plenitud de Cristo.”  Esta madurez significa encontrando un equilibrio entre la fe y el conocimiento (versículo 13), entre la honestidad y el amor (versículo 15), y más importante, entre la unidad del Espíritu y la diversidad de nuestros dones (versículos 3-6, 11-13).

Tuve un colega prodigioso con quien estaban resentido durante muchos años, simplemente porque era un profesor fabuloso.  ¡Tenía docenas de grupos de estudio en sus iglesias, mientras que yo luchaba para tener uno o dos!  Permití que sus dones me amenazaran y me dolieran, en vez de aprender de él y ser hecho mejor.  ¡Qué pérdida de tiempo infantil!  Necesitaba madurarme.  Es en esta diversidad de dones que florece la Iglesia, pero la diversidad puede avivar a sentimientos de competencia, deficiencia, y división.  Como un corazón fuera de su ritmo, luchas territoriales, batallas en comités, y ministerios llenos de celos se golpean uno contra el otro y dejan a la Iglesia en ruinas.  El reconocimiento que somo “un cuerpo,” eso es, en el mismo equipo pero también necesitando dones distintos, es clave para madurarse.  ¡También es remedio para el agotamiento, porque no trabajamos solos por Dios!

El Evangelio de Juan no describe la institución de la Santa Comunión en la Última Cena como hacen los otros evangelios.    En vez de eso, lo hace en capítulo 6: El discurso de Jesús acerca de dar de comer a los 5000.  En un sentido, Juan extiende la identificación de Jesús con el pan y el vino de una comida específica, una comida santa, a cualquiera hora y en cualquier lugar en que hallamos alimento.  Pausando para recordar que cada comida es sacramento del amor de Dios mediante Cristo solamente es parte de eso.  También es recordar que nuestras hambres más profundas, nuestro vacío del alma, solamente pueden ser satisfechos en Él quien es el pan de vida.  Los dichos “Yo soy” de Juan son únicos y nos dan una idea diferente de Jesús de los otros evangelios.  En los sinópticos, Jesús tiene tendencia de poner la atención fuera de sí mismo, de ordinario poniendo la atención y el reconocimiento únicamente a Dios (Marcos 10:18).  Pero Juan, es último escritor de evangelio, nos da un Jesús cuya autocomprensión refleja la teología que estaba desarrollando en su época.

En capítulo 6, Jesús, habiendo dado de comer a los 5000 (quizás 10,000 si contamos a las mujeres y a los niños) se hace muy popular.  Las multitudes lo siguen tras la Mar de Tiberio, quizás buscando otra comida gratis.  Jesús no está impresionado con estos discípulos aspirantes que demandan de él otro signo de él “para que veamos y te creamos.”  Hablando del milagro del maná en la época de Moisés, Jesús les ofrece algo mejor – él mismo.  Jesús mismo es el signo último del amor de Dios y el deseo de Dios que todos sean salvados.  Pero cuando habla de su cuerpo y su sangre siendo consumidos por sus seguidores, la popularidad de Jesús cae de golpe.  Algunas veces es fácil creer.  Algunas veces es difícil.  Varios signos nos guían en direcciones diferentes.  Lo que sostiene la creencia del discípulo no es el signo más reciente, sino la experiencia de la vida de Jesús y sus enseñanzas.  “Señor, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. Y nosotros hemos creído y conocido que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo del Dios viviente” (versículos 68-69).  Los milagros puede atraer la atención y generar emoción, pero el signo verdadero que crea una fe que perdura todavía se ve hoy: el Cristo de Dios, predicado, enseñado, y consumido en el medio de la gran congregación.
