Does prayer scare you? It also scared me at one time. I wasn’t comfortable praying out loud. Then I learned how to pray, and it became one of my gifts—to pray for others and even for myself. I discovered that prayer is simply a conversation with God. It doesn’t have to be lengthy. You don’t always have to ask for something specific. You can even say, "Thank You, Lord, for being with me today."
I've come to understand that you won't always get what you’re seeking right away. It's essential to remember that it’s God’s time and not yours. When you pray, you also need to take time to listen. God does speak to me in my prayers, but sometimes I am too busy wondering and not listening.
Different Types of Prayers
A.C.T.S. Prayer:
- Adoration: Praise God for who He is.
- Confession: Confess your sins and ask for forgiveness.
- Thanksgiving: Thank God for His blessings.
- Supplication: Ask for your needs and the needs of others.
Praying the Names of God: Reflect on the various names of God that reveal His character and promises.
Praying Hymns: Sing or recite hymns as a form of prayer, which can be both uplifting and meditative.
Praying Scripture: Use passages from the Bible as the foundation for your prayers.
Some of my favorite scriptures for praying are:
- Philippians 4:6: "Worry about nothing. Pray about everything."
- 1 Thessalonians 5:17: "Pray without ceasing."
- James 5:16: "Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so you may be healed."
The Power of Prayer
Why do I ask, “How can I pray for you”? Because I believe in the power of prayer. All you must do is ask. Don’t be afraid. You may not get an immediate answer, but don’t give up. Remember, it is God’s timing and not yours.
I want to share an answer to a prayer I prayed with an individual on Facebook. Their brother, a disabled veteran, was not getting the proper care he needed at the VA Hospital. The individual asked for prayer for answers and better care for her brother. I prayed fervently for his well-being and clear answers. The next day, she messaged me to say he was finally going to get the care he needed. He was scheduled for surgery at the Pittsburgh VA, and they had received confirmation he could stay there. God answers prayers.
When Words Fail
If you find yourself unable to pray, you can always pray The Lord’s Prayer. It's a comprehensive prayer that covers adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication.
I believe Prayer is a gift, a tool, and a lifeline. Don’t let fear hold you back. Give it a try. You might be surprised at the peace, strength, and connection it brings to your life.
What is your experience with prayer, do you have any particular ways or moments that have been significant for you?
