The U.S. ecumenical Creation Justice Ministries and coalitions of Christians worldwide invite churches everywhere to join in the month-long observance of the Season of Creation beginning Sept. 1.
Creation Justice Ministries says in a press release: "The Season of Creation is a time to renew our relationship with our Creator and all creation through celebration, conversion, and commitment together. ... Amid the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, many are beginning to despair and suffer from eco-anxiety. As people of faith we are called to lift the hope inspired by our faith, the hope of the resurrection. This is not a hope without action but one embodied."
The announcement continues: "As followers of Christ from around the globe, we share a common call to care for Creation. We are co-creatures and part of all that God has made. Our well-being is interwoven with the well-being of the Earth. We rejoice in this opportunity to safeguard our common home and all beings who share it. This year, the theme for the season is 'To hope and act with Creation.'"
The season starts Sept. 1, the Day of Prayer for Creation, and ends Oct. 4, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology beloved by many Christian denominations. Throughout the month-long celebration, the world’s 2.2 billion Christians come together to care for our common home.
The observance includes an ecumenical resource guide prepared by the World Council of Churches. It includes ideas for prayer, including an ecumenical prayer service and ways to incorporate and reflect on this year’s theme and symbol. In addition, it offers ways to participate in this year’s joint advocacy initiative to support the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty which calls for a halt to new fossil fuel projects. More resources, including webinars and prayer services, sample promotional materials, and the official Season of Creation social media channels, are available online.
