I would hope...

the inquiry as to who we are and what we should be doing would start with learning about who we are as Methodists and why Methodism came into existence. What I learned is that John Wesley's sole goal that brought Methodism into existence was to live a holy life centered in God. That quest led him to unexpected places including an encounter with and connecting his life to the triune God of holy love. He then started preaching about the triune God of holy love and enabling those that responded to his message to also live a holy life centered in God 24/7 regardless of their circumstances. He was the proof of this statement from C. S. Lewis:

"If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were those who thought most of the next. The apostle’s themselves, who set out on foot to convert the Roman Empire, the great men who built up the Middle Ages, the English evangelicals who abolished the slave trade, all left their mark on earth, precisely because their minds were occupied with Heaven. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become ineffective in this one. Aim at heaven and you will get earth “Thrown in.” Aim at earth and you will get neither." C.S. Lewis

Wesley aimed his life at heaven, then enabled others to do the same and as a result, the church, England, and America were all thrown in!
