Lumad People
Norma Capuyan and Monico Cayon, indigenous leaders from the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines, answer questions in the news area at the 2016 United Methodist General Conference at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. Both shared experiences of discrimination and are part of the Lakbay Lumad USA tour. Some of the group provided opening invocation and closing blessing for the reception and concert sponsored May 13 by the General Board of Church and Society.
Day 5 of General Conference was marked by worship pageantry that began in black light, and by demonstrators wearing rainbow gags to protest what they believe to be the silencing of LGBTQ people at the global legislative assembly.
