The 2016 General Conference approved the celebration of UMVIM Awareness Sunday as a way to pause and say “thank you” to all who participate in United Methodist Volunteers in Mission ministry in the U.S. and around the world.
United Methodist Volunteers in Mission Awareness Sunday is to be observed annually on a date determined by your annual conference (The Book of Discipline, 2016).
The work of UMVIM volunteers includes construction and renewing of mission facilities, teaching, witnessing, conducting medical clinics, holding Bible study or Bible school for children, and serving in disaster relief efforts around the world.
Volunteers exhibit a significant commitment to these communities and to the work of Christ. This vital ministry extends the church into communities and helps empower individuals.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Christian Love in Action.” It is taken from 1 John 3:18, in which Christians are asked to love “not in word or speech, but in truth and action.”
We hope that you will select a time in your worship service to recognize volunteers in your congregation and to celebrate those who give so much of themselves to the work of Christ.
The General Board of Global Ministries has prepared resources to help enhance your celebration. We are encouraging churches to celebrate UMVIM Awareness Sunday on Laity Sunday on Oct. 15. Download bulletin inserts, social media posts, litanies and much more atumcmission.org/volunteer.
