Memo for Those Who Preach

Isaiah 43:1-7, Psalm 29, Acts 8:14-17, Luke 3:15-17, 21-22

And a voice came from heaven, “You are my son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”  (Luke 3:22) With those words, Luke gives us the epiphany (revealing, manifestation, showing forth) of God which is at the heart of the story of Jesus’ baptism.  On this “Baptism of the Lord” Sunday, we do well to consider what this experience meant to Jesus and what it says to us as Christ-followers.

We know the “who-what-when-and where” of this baptism story.  Who? The main characters are Jesus and John the Baptizer, Jesus’ cousin and forerunner. When? Both are young men around 30 years old, coming of age in Israel when expectation was high that the coming of the Messiah was at hand.  John had followed God’s call on his life to be a prophet and baptizer, and many had flocked to him for baptism - a Jewish rite symbolizing repentance for sin.  They also wondered if John might be the long-awaited Messiah, in spite of his clear message in Luke 3:16: “I baptize you with water, but one who is more powerful than I is coming…”  Where?  The setting is the Jordan River, that historical boundary between the wilderness and the Promised Land.  What? The incident is the baptism of Jesus by John.  According to Luke, Jesus came along with the rest of the crowd to be baptized – not with any particular fanfare, not drawing attention to himself.  

But why?  For centuries scholars have asked, “Why would the One who knew no sin seek out a rite of repentance?”  Perhaps it was because Jesus intentionally chose to relate to sinners: "I come not to call the righteous, but the sinner to repentance." (Luke 5:32) Getting baptized was one way to identify with them.  Or maybe Jesus chose baptism as a pivot point from life as a village carpenter into active ministry.  With that action, he accepted his call from God.  Afterward, as he prayed, God affirmed his call with that powerful visual and audible epiphany, “You are my son, the Beloved.” Jesus was claimed and called by God.  

That’s the “who-what-when-where-why?” of Jesus’ baptism.  But maybe those aren’t the only important questions here – perhaps they simply set the stage for this one: “What’s next?” Besides hearing God’s voice after his baptism, Jesus also saw a visual representation of the Holy Spirit descending on him.  Immediately that same Spirit thrust him into a time of testing and then accompanied him into his history-changing ministry.  Read ahead to Luke 4:1, “Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness…”, and Luke 4:14. “Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee…” And further, Jesus regularly reminded his followers that as they went forth in ministry, the Holy Spirit would be with them.  What about baptism?  After the Resurrection, Jesus instructed his disciples: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19) Thus, the Church through the centuries has offered baptism as an initiation rite into the faith, not primarily for the repentance of sin, but as a symbol of discipleship. Through baptism, Christians affirm that we too are filled with the power of the Holy Spirit and called into the world in a ministry of self-giving love. 

Whether your congregation uses this Sunday to reaffirm your baptisms or not, the beginning of a new year is a good time to affirm that God has called all present-day disciples into ministry and will, through the power of the Spirit, give us the guidance we need.    Baptism is both an affirmation of God-with-us and a thrust into the world in service.  Sure – the world is a mess right now, but it was in Jesus’ day as well. Yes – We United Methodist Christians are divided among ourselves, but so was the early Church.  None of those challenges should deter us from our call to go forth to share the love of Christ.  What’s next for you?

In the hymnal I used throughout most of my ministry, the baptism pages are wrinkled and puckered from water.  It appears that I regularly baptized my hymnal as well as the individuals before me! Those water-marked pages make me smile now as I remember all those baptisms – babies, youth, adults.  Offering the sacrament of baptism is a high privilege, as we convey to those before us that they too are claimed and called by God.  So, blessings upon each of you on this special Sunday.  “The Holy Spirit work within you, that having been born through water and the Spirit, you may live as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.” Amen

Y vino una voz del cielo que decía: “Tú eres mi Hijo amado; en ti tengo complacencia.”  (Lucas 3:22) Con estas palabras, Lucas nos da la epifanía (la revelación, la manifestación) de Dios que está al corazón de la historia del bautismo de Jesús.  En este domingo del “Bautismo del Señor,” nos es bueno considerar qué significó esta experiencia a Jesús y qué nos dice a nosotros como seguidores de Cristo.

Sabemos el “quién-qué-cuándo-y dónde” de esta historia del bautismo.  ¿Quién?  Los caracteres importantes son Jesús y Juan el Bautista, el primo de Jesús y el predecesor.  ¿Cuándo?  Ambos son hombres jóvenes con unos 30 años, llegando a su mayoría en Israel cuando las expectaciones eran altas que la llegada de un Mesías estaba a mano.  Juan había seguido el llamado de Dios en su vida para ser profeta y bautista, y muchos le habían acudido para bautizo – un rito judío simbolizando el arrepentimiento para el pecado.  También se preguntaban si fuera posible que Juan pudiera ser el Mesías tan anhelado, a pesar de su mensaje claro en Lucas 3:16: “Yo a la verdad os bautizo en agua, pero viene uno más poderoso que yo . . .”  ¿Dónde?  La escena es el Río Jordán, esa frontera histórica entre el desierto y la Tierra Prometida.  ¿Qué?  El incidente es el bautismo de Jesús por Juan.  Según Lucas, Jesús vino con el resto de la muchedumbre para ser bautizado – sin fanfarria, ni llamando atención a sí mismo.

Pero, ¿por qué?  Durante siglos los eruditos han preguntado, “Por qué pediría el rito de arrepentimiento Él que jamás conoció el pecado?  Tal vez fue porque Jesús con intención escogió relacionarse con pecadores:  No he venido a llamar a justos, sino a pecadores al arrepentimiento. (Lucas 5:32) El ser bautizado fue una manera de identificarse con ellos.  O quizás Jesús escogió el bautismo como un punto básico de la vida como carpintero en una aldea para entrar en ministerio activo.  Con aquella acción, aceptó su llamado de Dios.  Después, como oraba, Dios afirmó su llamado con esa epifanía poderosa y audible, “Tú eres mi Hijo amado.”  Jesús fue reclamado y llamado por Dios.

Eso es el “quién-qué-cuándo-dónde-por qué” del bautismo de Jesús.  Pero tal vez ésas no son las únicas preguntas importantes aquí – quizás simplemente preparan el camino para ésta: “¿Y ahora qué?” Además de oír la voz de Dios después de su bautismo, Jesús también vio una representación del Espíritu Santo descendiendo hacia él.  Inmediatamente ese mismo Espíritu lo empujó en un tiempo de pruebas y entonces lo acompañó en su ministerio que cambió la historia.  Leamos un poco más adelante en Lucas 4:1: “Jesús, lleno del Espíritu Santo, volvió del Jordán y fue llevado por el Espíritu al desierto . . .” y en Lucas 4:14: “Jesús volvió en el poder del Espíritu a Galilea”. Y más todavía, Jesús los acordaba regularmente a sus seguidores que como salían a hacer ministerio, el Espíritu Santo estaría con ellos.  ¿Y qué pasa con el bautismo?  Después de la Resurrección, Jesús enseñó a sus discípulos: “Id y haced discípulos a todas las naciones, bautizándolos en el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo.”  (Mateo 28:19) Por eso, la Iglesia durante los siglos ha ofrecido el bautismo como un rito de iniciación a la fe, no principalmente para el arrepentimiento de pecados, sino como símbolo del discipulado.  Mediante el bautismo, los cristianos afirman que nosotros también somos llenados con el poder del Espíritu Santo y somos llamados al mundo en un ministerio de amor que se da de sí mismo.

Sea que su congregación use este domingo para reafirmar sus bautismos o no, el comienzo de un año nuevo es buena hora para afirmar que Dios ha llamado a todos los discípulos actuales al ministerio, y mediante el poder del Espíritu, nos dará la guía que necesitamos.  El bautismo es ambos una afirmación que Dios está con nosotros y un empujón hacia el mundo en servicio.  Es verdad – el mundo es un lío ahora mismo, pero también lo era en el tiempo de Jesús.  Sí – nosotros los cristianos metodistas unidos somos divididos entre nosotros, pero también lo fue la Iglesia primitiva.  Ningunos de esos desafíos deben impedir nuestro llamado para entrar en el mundo para compartir el amor de Cristo.  ¿Y ahora qué para Ud.?

En el himnario que usé durante la mayoría de mi ministerio, las páginas sobre el bautismo son arrugadas de agua.  ¡Parece que regularmente bautizaba mi himnario tanto como a los individuos ante mí!  Esas páginas marcadas con agua me hacen sonreír ahora como recuerdo todos esos bautismos – bebés, jóvenes, adultos.  Ofreciendo el sacramento del bautismo es privilegio alto, como comunicamos a los que están ante nosotros que ellos también son reclamados y llamados por Dios.  Así que, bendiciones para cada uno de Uds. este domingo especial.  “El Espíritu Santo actúe en ti, que habiendo nacido mediante el agua y el Espíritu puedas vivir como fiel discípulo(a) de Jesucristo.”  Amén.
